how to tune power jets on a gas motor?

they are 35.5 mikuni flat slides. what color are the plugs saposed to be? my friend said to get rid of them and just run my carb without them and re jet them. -
I have a 4 mil and it has power jets and i have no clue how to ajust them or what color the plugs are saposed to be? i am new to this any suggestions?
