  1. Nice, thanks - they've got some great armor, too!
  2. Yeah, I didn't see anything online that would work for me - most guys want light and fast, and not farm quad cargo carriers geared for long-distance. Somehow I'm always going counter-current with my life! The six pack rack is something like this, right? I might have to build something myself. I have a grab bar on right now, so could prolly add to that.
  3. Looking to add some sort of cargo-carrying system for multi-day runs, and would appreciate seeing what you guys do.
  4. Will soon have to mount GPS and I'm wondering how best to set it up. If anybody running GPS could post how they've done it, I'd appreciate it. I could use either a largish Garmin 276C or an older Garmin 12XL (tough as old sandals!) or possibly both. Yes, I will need GPS, definitely.
  5. That's one of the first things I need to get once the engine is back up and running... I like the simple no batteries type. Good to know there could be vibration problems so I'll mount it on rubber or some sort of foam.
  6. In that case I have wrong info and you saved me a lot of hassle and $$$... always got to double-check what shops tell you, especially when just a generation ago the guy would have been selling three-legged camels: "this one champion runner - very good 3 legs - each leg same two, so this camel have 6 legs, good, no?" So, then banshee stock cylinders are cast iron and not aluminium? And therefore re-boring is no problem at all. Actually, they do look like aluminium to me... what are they made of? Got to tell you guys this forum is a lifesaver already - thanks!
  7. Hey guys - trying to decide whether to re-bore to 65.5mm or replace cylinders with new OEM. Re-boring is cheaper, but how important is the Nikasil coating? Where I live in the Middle East re-boring does not in any way shape or form include any sort of fancy coating: it's just raw aluminium, and you hope it's at least done straight. AFAIK, Nikasil is an coating on the cylinder wall that helps wear... my question is if I put my brand-new shiny pistons in a re-bored sleeve without any Nikasil coating, but I do the proper careful break-in procedures, will I be opening up the engine soon after to again replace the pistons? If interested, Duncan Racing says: NIKASIL COATED CYLINDERS: If your cylinder has Nikasil or other chrome type plating on the bore surface it cannot be bored. A Nikasil coatings is a form of plating adhered to the inside of your aluminum cylinder to do away with the old style conventional steel sleeve designed cylinders. Many OEM MX bikes have these types of cylinders. As does many of Duncan Racings PC 2000 and Hyperdyne ATV cylinders. When replacing piston and or rings in a cylinder of this type, it is advisable to deglaze bore with a Ball Hone. Use some form of lubricant when honing. DO NOT USE ANY OTHER TYPE OF HONE OR CYLINDER DAMAGE COULD RESULT. Consult a professional if you have any reservations regarding the above information. 8. I'm in Al Ain, garage is called "Banshee" but I like to do the work myself at home. Except welding and turning and painting and other stuff that needs specialized equipment. The dude said the cylinder can be turned, but couldn't tell me down to how much - could be a whisker left when he's done... so I'll double-check with a turning shop to see how much they will have to remove.
  9. Thanks good advice, especially the radiator. I can get that here, I'm sure. Also I'd want a temp gauge. Yeah, the cylinder sleeve looks pretty bad. I'm taking in to a turner tonight to see what they say, but I'm pretty sure you're right and it's toast. What brand welded crankshaft would you suggest? And keep it stock specs? As for pistons, what brand are desert-proof?
  10. Here's what the dunes look like
  11. Was just given a 2001 Banshee - beauty, belonged to a pro desert racer, he rides sponsored machines and it's been cluttering up his garage for years. knows I like to fix stuff and so he dropped it off. it's great to have good friends and pass on the favour one day. His name is Sebastian Husseini - google him to check him out if u like! Won the last UAE Desert Challenge, and UAE BAJA so he's riding hot at the moment in this sandy part of the world, with KTM team. anyways, engine is in a box, dismantled - crankshaft bearing seizure, kaboom! at minimum needs new crankshaft, new pistons, maybe can re-bore cylinder sleeves. my question for u pros is do i rebuild stock or go with aftermarket parts? this is my 1st quad, but i'm plenty experienced working on project 4x4s. my aim is for a long-distance desert expedition quad, camping 2-nights out, over pure sand dunes (live on the edge of the Rub al Khali, the Empty Quarter - awesome dunes you wouldn't believe!) so reliability is top priority. absolutely without any doubt it is number one on my list. Now, forgetting power gains which i'm not interested in, which aftermarket parts would be more reliable than stock Yamaha parts for an engine rebuild? some pics: The engine scored cylinder: a little rust (really dry out here, so rust is not an issue) good solid quad, with already some mods, like long-range gas tank, twist throttle instead of thumb control, not sure what else... looks like he cut the front fenders? any advice appreciated guys
