  1. I still can't figure out why it's not running as sharp as it did before the timing advancement. The stator was in its same rusty state before the timing plate install and it ran 100%. Could have just taking it apart and putting the new plate on have opened a bag of worms? From idle to about half throttle it sputters a bit, then gets sharp sounding, and before the install, it always had that "sharp, crisp" tone to it... Any help from you performance experts is much appreciated. Thanks, Anthony
  2. Thanks for the info. I'm in the middle of just replacing the stator and pickup. The flywheel, I have cleaned the contact points, but the pickup-coil's tip is a bit too worn down... Thanks again, Anthony
  3. I installed my timing plate and have it set to what I think is +4. Could some of you experts just confirm my setting for me? I'm troublshooting some power issues and need to make sure that this part can be ruled out. I'm just going down the list trying to figure out my problem is. (fouling plugs/weak spark). Everything ran just fine, and the only mod made at this time was the timing plate install. And since that ONE modification, I have seemed to develop a weak spark. I've adjusted the gap and made sure it was at .02" and made sure all contact points were clean. If this is indeed the correct setting for a +4 degree advancment, then I'm gonna go to plug wires and start looking there. Those had some activity lately, and did so when I installed the NOSS Collhead. This is driving me nuts, not being able to pinpoint why the problem. I'd love to think it was my stator, at least I'd know, and could replace, but this ONLY started happening immediately after my timing plate install. My quad feels like it's at about 75% - 80% power wise and plugs are fouling. When checked, they were black, one was wet, the other like it had carbon mixed with oil, kind of like an oily sand look. Please help... Thanks, Anthony Timing Setting Pic 1 - (Please click: "Click to view full image" below, it's a good pic of the setting) Timing Setting Pic 2 - (Please click: "Click to view full image" below, it's a good pic of the setting) Thanks again ..........................
  4. Here are some pics of my timing plate installed, please feel free to let me know if it is actually set to +4. I believe the gap was off, it was well over .025, but in adjusting the pickup, i broke a screw off in the timing plate :verymad: ... But, managed to get the screw out and have replacements and will put it all back together today. I'd like to know for sure from some of you guys if I do actually have it set at +4... 'nother view Thanks everyone, Anthony
  5. Based on today's ride, it still aint running "right"... I'm probably gonna replace the stator completly, clean everything up, replace all if the electronics in there and be done with that uncertainty of the rust and everything. There are pieces on the damn Titanic with less corrosion than my timing plate has. Anyone know where to get a good used stock stator and all components related to that section, flywheel and all? Thanks Anthony
  6. Kinda my thoughts, I couldn't see how the oil would have made this much of a difference when it wasn't fouling at ALL before the timing plate. I looked over the wiring, and it all looked ok, but this weekend, if I'm still having problems, I'm going straight back to where the problems started. I'm pretty sure I advanced it. I also used the "How to" on this board as a reference... But in the end, yes, it ONLY started doing this after the timing plate install, and that was the only mod made at that time. Thanks for the info, Anthony
  7. Yeah, it was all pretty nasty in there, but the stator and flywheel didn't look AS bad... I think it's where I'm going back to on this... Thanks for the info on the gapping... Anthony
  8. Didn't think about that...could be... The inside of the casing was ALL rusty. If I have another fouled plug tonight or tomorrow, I'm gonna tear it back down and check that, along with the gap. I'll by a set of gap tools today. So with my setup (see signature), is 20 the setting I should set it at for the gap between the flywheel and magneto or whatever it's called? Rusty Timing Plate... Normal?
  9. I never fouled a plug once until I advanced my timing. As soon as I did that, fouling plugs became an every ride issue. Is Yamalube THAT dirty? My buddy's shee never fouls a plug and runs the same oil as I have been, the Yamalube R.
  10. I'm running NGK R BR8ES, well, that's what's in there now, I put those in after my others fould, and they could have been 9's, I mean I bought the 8's for a reason, and they were a different set than I've ever used is why it's throwing me a bit. I'm gonna see how they do, if still fouling, I may either go with a set of 7's, or retard the plate maybe 2 degrees...dunno I'll upgrade to a better oil, thats for sure. Any recommendations on the best place to get some of the mentioned oils, Klotz, Amsoil, Castor927, etc... And do wny of these places sell by the case too? Thanks, Anthony
  11. I put an adjustable timing plate on the other week, this is how rusted everything was. Do I have a bad gaskest? Is it normal for this much rust? The flywheel, stator, and the timing plate all looked like this...
  12. I'm running 8's... This never happened once bofre the timing plate, that was the ONLY mod made and now it's a fouled or both fouled each ride. The first one, on the "choke" side was wet and oily, the second time it was clumpy, like it had dirty and oil caked on...
  13. Thanks Stroker... I've tried 2 different sets of plugs, so I don't know right off hand which I have in right now, I'll check it tonight. When I was looking at which head to buy, I did quite a bit of talking with David at NOSS, and he said I could run 93 Octane with 21cc domes, which is what I run. I'm definately gonna try one of the other oils mentioned above and see how that goes... And thanks for the diagram too, cool diagram and informational... Anthony
  14. I 've been using Yamalube R at 50:1... I never fouled a plug once until I added my timing plate and set it at +4. The mods are in my signature, could it be as simple as running a hotter spark plug? Thanks, Anthony
