Backfiring at 3/4 to full throttle
trashedbanshee replied to trashedbanshee's topic in Jetting & Exhaust Forum
The choke crossover tube is on, I'll even double check. If I change the main jets to a 300 or 310, would you suggest I change anything else? Should I change my needles to the ones that came with the jet kit I bought and what position should I put the clip in. Should I adjust the pilots? I really think that its starving for gas on top end, I just wasnt sure how much bigger of a jet I should use and if anything else was going to have to be changed. -
I just finished rebuilding the top end, have a pro design coolhead with 20cc domes, I have removed all the roughness from casting in the intake and exhaust ports, v force 2 reeds, fmf fatty exhaust, stock 26mm carbs with 270 main jets, k&n filter and no air box lid. Im riding in south jersey at about sea level and it was near 50 degrees yesterday. I have loss of power from 3/4 to full throttle. My low end is pretty responsive, mid range could be a bit better and top end it just dies and backfires. Before the top end was rebuilt i had a stock head, fmf reeds, and stock intake and exhaust ports running 260 main jets and it ran good. I bought a dyon jet kit it comes with new needle jets, 270, 280, and 340 main jets. I also have a set of keihin 34mm pjs.....i took them off awhile ago b/c i couldnt get my quad to run right with them and went back to stock carbs. So anyway any help, tips or suggestion to get it running to full potential would be great. thankyou

I am in need of a arms, stock or maybe aftermarket. The balljoint on one of mine is shot. I like to replace all 4 arms at one time. Im looking for all 4 stock arms in good shape or a really really good/cheap deal on extended a arms and shocks. Let me know what you have and how much. Thanks, Rob

Ive had the whole topend off down to the crank and rods. While I was in there i sucked all the water out and sprayed brake cleaner down there and sucked all that up afterwards. I blew the bottom end out with an air gun and oiled it with belray 2 stroke oil. I replaced the top end with .020 wiesco pistons and had the cylinders honed. I put the head and reeds on, and installed the carbs back on with only changing to 270 jets. I only changed the mains in the carbs. Before the head gasket went it ran fine with the same settings and 260 jets. It has everything to run it just doesnt. Doest even fire sputter or bog. I have also tried pop starting in and had no luck........this is very fustrating. Thanks for the info if i have no luck ill try what you suggested.

Ok my head gasket was blown and I have it all back together, but she still doesnt run. I had FMF ram valve reeds and they were distorted from it being so hot. So I replaced them with V-force 2 reeds, was I suppose to trim the stock intake manifolds to be used with the v forces? I also smoothed out both the intake and exhaust ports. I bought the pro design head and have 20cc domes. I rejetted my carbs from a 260 to a 270 jet, didnt touch the pilot needles or idle. Everythings all back together and I was hoping to hear it run tonight, but nope. I have no idea what it is. I have compression, spark and seem to be getting fuel. I have fuel from the fuel lines and the bowls of the carbs were filled when i pulled them off tonight to check and make sure everything was good. Is there anyway Im still not getting enough fuel to the cylinders. Or could I be getting too much fuel? I might go back to 260 mains and see what happens tommorrow. I really need help I havent been able to ride the thing for more than 20 mins in over 6 months. HELP! thanks

Yes my mistake on the jetting. Its been awhile since Ive rejetted my carbs and Ive ran both Mikuni and Keihin carbs, i just got confused. My exhaust came with 265 main jets and I think I have 270s. Im not really going to open up the ports just polish them. I wanna remove any roughness from casting.

Took my banshee out saturday and rode 20minutes before she died. Was going along and she just bogged down and died. I noticed the head was smoking and was very hot. I took the rad cover off and had nothing in it. Everything was pushed out the resivoir bottle. I added water and it was leaking around the studs on the haed. Tightened everything up and no leaks. I tried to start it and had no luck at all. Checked the plugs and they were wet. I had blown my head gasket. I took it home and replaced the gasket and got all the water out of it. After numerous attempts I could only get it to fire on one cylinder. The next day I stripped it down and found out that my reeds on the right side were all distorted, Im guessing from the heat. I took everything off and see the one piston looks pretty shitty, so Im going to put new pistons and rings in it. I measured the cylinders and im still in spec so Im going to clean em up with a hone. I ordered a Wiesco piston kit, Pro Design Coolhead w/20cc domes, and will be using V-Force 2 reeds. Id also like to clean up the intake and exhaust ports on the barrels. I don't wanna get to crazy with porting and polishing, just looking to smooth them out with some emry cloth and a die grinder. Currently I have FMF Fatty pipes, FMF Ram Valve reeds, and a K&N airfilter with no lid. I have stock carbs, stock head and I ride at sea level. I've also been running 100 octane mixed with Maxima Castor 927 at 32:1. Will I be able to ever go back to running 93 octane with 20cc dome in the head? I think when I bought my exhaust it came with 165 main jets and I think now im running 170s. My jetting now is perfect, but will the Coolhead w/20cc domes, the V-Force reeds, and the slight polishing I do to the intake and exhaust really effect my jetting? If so what do you guys suggest I do? Thanks for any suggestions or help.

ive got 22" pure sport realtors running in the direction for dirt not sand. I think traction is what got me. ive got the 13 tooth sprocket and launched in 1st, your saying i should launch in 2nd. What if i ran the stock 14tooth sprocket rather than the 13? What do you think the problem is with me misfiring when i hit 3rd? Could I be running to lean? Should i toss the bigger carbs on?All I wanna do is beat this kid! -
I drag raced my friends 06 450R against my 91 Banshee. The place was fairly flat but like damp wet sand. we ran about a 200ft race. Running at sea level at about 50 degrees. His 450R is supposedly stock... visually doesnt seem to be anything done to it. hes weighing in at about 170 -200. My Banshee is a rebuilt motor bored I believe .60 over not sure if its got any port work or an aftermarket crank. I was told the head is shaved, but it doesn't look any different than stock. I've got FMF reeds, stock carbs, with stock carbs i think ive got 260 maybe 270s for main jets, K&N filter in the stock box no lid, FMF Fattys to old style Toomey silencers. I ve got Maxxis Razars up front on .190s and Realators out back on .190s set for running in the dirt. I've also got a 13 tooth sprocket up front. Im weighing about 140-160. First run, I launched in 2nd he got me off the line and came in my lane b/c he pulled wheels. I wasn't sure weather to stay on it or let off so he took that win. Second run, I launched in first and the banshee went right on its ass. Third run, he stalled right at the line. LOL Fourth run, I launched in first and he caught up to me at the end. So a few of my buddies said I wass spinning tires in all gears (no traction), but that my quad wasn't running right and would misfire when i hit third gear. What that all about? His buddy that supposedly has 2 Banshees and knows what hes talikng about siad my quad was smelling funny and I'm running too lean, I'm gonna blow my motor. Although my Quad has ran as is for about 4 years no problem. Well anyway I know my Banshee should take his 450R. I just wanna shut these kids up b/c all they do is bullshit and talk smack. So is it my Banshee isn't running right and my jettings off? Do I have enough motor? Im thinking I just didn't have enough traction in the sand with my tires turned for dirt and im too light for the quads power. Would it be a good idea to put the 34mm PJs that came with the quad back on for power? I tooke them off mainly b/c I ride it everywhere and it would foul plugs in trails. What do I do? I gotta beat this kid its embarassing lol! Thanks guys
