  1. I have a 421 cub with a similar setup, high compression, +7 on the plate. I run VP110 which is 107 motor octane with no issues, Sunoco standard 110 is 106 motor octane which will work as well. VP C12 is 108 motor octane and Sunoco supreme 110 is a true 112 motor octane. Any of those will work just fine. If you run an oxygenated fuel then you might need to jet fatter on the main, but that’s about it.

  2.

These 2 points are of particular interest to me.

you have an almost 80hp stock cyl, that doesn't detonate or back plugs out ..already jetted ...but IPS needs to get in there and set it up different?

Why? Just because it's not how THEY choose to do it?

Anybody who's been around this game knows there are MANY ways to achieve the same goal. Just because it's a different way than YOU do it, doesn't make it wrong.

I've NEVER seen a dune ported stock cylinder need 400mains btw. OF COURSE it'll be down HP with that size main ( idgaf what IPS a/f meter said) if Redline said run 330-350. ..I'm pretty sure he knows what his motors jet out at over someone else.

I'm not directing any of this to Frank btw..I'm still of the mindset that someone got between the builder of the motor and Frank ...and fubard the situation.

I currently have 440 mains, 30 pilots, needle in the middle on my stock cylinder 4 mill, stock carbs, shearer sb, pod filters. 77rwhp, 40rwtq. Everyone says that I'm jetted beyond fat and should be in the 340 range more or less. The afr on the dyno showed that my engine wanted more fuel. Maybe they jetted it fat so that I could be on the safe side? Should I experiment with some 340, 350 mains? Also what would require an engine to have such a fat main jet? It just doesn't make sense that similar setups out there are in the 340 range for the most part.
  3. You went to a 4 mill with a different builder but what did Kevin due originally sycotic

Originally all I wanted was your stock stroke dune ported setup, shaved head, advanced timing. Your typical 65hp setup on stock carbs. I dropped off my bike at his garage, he said alright I'll have it done soon. I told him to check if I need a new top end and all of that, he calls me a couple of days later and says yeah you don't need a new top end, you're good. I was like ok. So the day comes up that I pick it up, he said I ported your cylinders, milled your head, advanced your timing to +4, I jetted your carbs with a 330 main, I didn't have the pilot jets so I drilled them out to a 28, and the needle is in the middle clip. To make a long ass story short, the cylinders wouldn't fire evenly and the thing had practically no low end power, my top end ended up being shot, also my timing was only at +2 not +4, the head wasn't even cut and rechambered correctly, wrong jetting. Just a lot of mistakes by this guy, also he wasn't willing to stand by his work, so I was like screw him I'm going somewhere else.
  4. So the text that I still saved to this day of him offering no help on my jetting issue is okay?

The builder that re did my motor saying, "here's your problem, these domes are cut all wrong for your motor." Is wrong?

The multiple calls to him asking for advise, and him turning around and asking me what jets I have, while he says "that should be close keep trying."

I spent well over 1200 with him for my motor and parts. So once he ports and ships te stuff out that's it? He dosent have to offer any advise?

.020 base gasket?! Are you fucking kidding? Do you even know what kind of port is done to the motor I'm assembling? That's something Kevin would say. "Just use .020" that'll be good enough". You clearly are just a nut swinger. Have you not noticed all the people sayin there having problems with him? This kid I'm doing for the motor got sucked into his 10 day turn around. Which I've heard a few story's about how he can pull that off. So If I had known he was gonna go to hjr I would have steered him clear of that after my whole ordeal.

On my personal bike, I did a lot. Let me tell you what I did because I couldn't get rid of the bog that Kevin couldn't help me with.

    -new stator. Oem of course

    -new flywheel. Oem

    -new coil oem

-new caps ngk oem and parts unlimited

    -new cdi oem

    -new harness oem

    -new tether

All my engine parts came from HJR. So I stupidly assumed after spending 1200 with the guy my parts would all work together. Clearly not. I went from lean to where the bike hanged revs, to rich where my plug gaps would bridge with all the fuel.

So Kevin can suck a dick. He's only in it for the money and dosent care about his customers or his work. You can direct him to this thread.

I normally don't bash people like this, but you have no clue what your talking about and Kevin is a useless guy with a porting tool. He's not a builder in my book.

I agree with what you have to say about Kevin. I called a few other builders and they all gave me a similar answer to what my problem was. At the end of the day, they were right. Kevin simply said "check timing" "change your premix ratio" "change your spark plugs" "keep playing with the jetting" "make sure your fuel is fresh", etc. circles, circles, circles. Not cool at all.
  5. Kevin has become hit or miss lately. I'm assembling a motor he built and I'm dreading calling him asking him for specifics so I can get domes made up and figure out a base gasket.

I've had his motor once as my personal motor. Didn't run right. Chased jetting all over. Dome issue. Kevin offered ZERO help. Just said "keep jetting it your getting close" always a weird bog up top and not the pull a 4 mil should've had.

One was just done recently by a buddy. Sent Kevin a pic of the plugs asking for help. Kevin's help "plugs don't lie" nothing more.

He'll take your money and do everything you ask, then when it comes time for follow help he's useless. That's shitty business IMO as I've called almost all builders on the sponsor page and have gotten help from them. A few I haven't spent a dime with.

Pretty much what this guy said. The guy works too fast, and doesn't take the time to do it right. Cuts corners, not the way to build engines if you ask me. Drilling jets, not rebuilding the top end when it clearly needs one, he just puts everything together and sends it out hoping you won't catch the problem. Once I dropped off my bike to allen, the next day he told me what was wrong with it and what needed to be done to make it right. I went with the 4 mill stroker and the thing is running stronger than ever. Hjr is a hit or miss, I'm definitely not taking the risk. I'm glad some of you have had luck with him, It's your hard earned money.
  6. My experience with Kev was awful. He can port stock cylinders on the Banshee well. The problem is when he makes a mistake he tries to hide it. If you figure out how bad he stuck it too you, he will not take responsibility. Seems like forum members aren't quite licking his balls like they did when I posted "shops that don't stand behind their work" read his warranty disclaimer.

Damn dude it all makes sense now. I had a horrible experience with him also. He knew that he messed my shit up, but wouldn't stand behind his work. Ended up going with allen knowles at ct racing. My stock cylinder 4 mill made 77rwhp 40tq on stock carbs. I'm happy with it, plus he's less than 10 miles from my house. He even dyno tuned it and everything for free once it was broken in. If I were to do it all over again though, it would be redline. If I ever upgrade to a cub or serval, it will be Cameron at redline racing that will do it. Hjr was a definite miss for me. I don't recommend him.
  7. I checked my plugs and they were a brown, caramel color all around the white area, not black or anything like that. CT built my motor and set it up. I'll have to double check on the mains because he might have told me they start with a 400 main and then lean them down accordingly. I know a lot of you are going to pick on me now because I mentioned "CT". Lol

  8. So what was the real problem with that motor?

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

On my engine it was low compression and totally off jetting. Got that fixed and it runs way better now. Now my fatass keeps bogging off the line, but that's another chapter.
  9. Regardless his baseline jetting was all wrong to the fullest. Bike was running worse than before, way worse! Also he didn't even remember how much he milled on my head, he simply said what he generally does to banshee heads. "I mill this much when I port them and this much when I don't." Most builders that I heard put jets in there and don't start drilling shit just because they're too lazy to order them. He also charged me for a jet kit, which he obviously didn't even use. He was like "those numbers on the jets aren't the ones you have, I drilled them out to match what should've went in there." Who knows what the heck he did. He also put on the paper that he cleaned the carbs, yeah right! Those things were all dirty.

  10. You see here's more proof that he fails. What builder drills out stock jets just because he doesn't have them in his garage? Kevin! Obviously you're a hjr fan and want to defend him to the fullest, I'm simply sharing my story. Yeah your hjr motor is probably faster than mine, like I care since being the fastest is one of my least concerns, especially since I weigh over 280lbs which puts me at a big disadvantage anyways against all of you lighter dudes. I'm simply looking for something that's fun and reliable, Kevin couldn't even do that.

Regardless it's also Kevin's job to provide customer service. I also got the run around. Keep playing with the jetting your close. I was doing that for a year. Tons of emails and phone calls. All to lead to a dome issue that Kevin never took into account. It took another builder to tell me that.

I told Kevin my jetting, he said it seems right. Move the needle. I did that. He said he's not sure what the issue is. Then he said my jetting must still be off.

It's not all about jetting. And that's all he offers and vaguely at that. Not what I want when I spend 1000 bucks with you.

  11. I was upset because I paid for something that ran like shit and he wasn't very helpful in determining my issue. Once I called another builder and told him my issues, he had a really good idea what was the problem and sure enough he was right. Why couldn't Kevin do that instead of saying adjust airscrews, check timing, lean out your mix to 40:1, change spark plugs, adjust your jetting. Circles circles circles. I have also heard that his dome setups and stroker setups have failed many people big time.

  12. I dropped off my bike to him and asked him to do a dune port setup, shaved head, advanced timing, etc. one week later it was done, so we test it out and the thing had very weak power and pathetic low end. Couldn't even launch in first, etc. he simply drilled the jets and didn't even put the right ones in there, the head was only decked not rechambered, etc, timing was only set at +2 instead of the +4 he told me. Very very weak setup and a waste of money unfortunately. He also wasn't very helpful in determining my problem, he simply drove me in circles, told me to bring it back, but he was going to charge me, I was like nah I'll pass buddy. Ended up being my top end was shot jetting was way off. Long story short his work sucked, my new builder set me up with a stock cylinder 4 mill that runs way better beyond night and day difference. I simply need to set it up perfectly to get it to it's maximum potential. Right now though I'm happy. I believe hjr needs to do more testing and riding on his engines so that he can see what works and what doesn't, all he has is his garage and that isn't enough. All true builders have a dyno, machine shop, etc. I guess you don't need all those things, but you have to know what works and what doesn't. He simply builds stuff and sends them out hoping they're all perfectly setup. Things simply don't work that way in my opinion.
