i did a search and read if you have an air leak to spray carb cleaner over the rubber intake boots. I did this and the bike revved higher? now i thought if you had an air leak the bike would almost stall out after you sprayed it, mines doing the opposite? anybody have this happen? is it an air leak???

good possibility you have an airleak.

id pull the intakes and check them for cracks and whatnot.

you dont have a boost bottle by chance do you?

ya that means its leaking somewhere. it's revving b/c of the extra (high combustible) "fuel"

 

great well that answers the revving problem.

now the bike wont start with out some starting fluid. could this be because of the air leak too?

Hard starting is usually a pretty good sign of a lean condition, and since the carb cleaner made it rev, you can pretty much be assured, that you do have an air leak. Your pilot jets could also be plugged, so now would be a good time to take them apart, and clean them, while removing the intakes to check everything there. To be safe, I'd say to change out the gaskets on the intakes, and reed cages, and make sure the intakes aren't cracked, as someone already mentioned.

Just wondering...I'm not sure how the bike would act to make you think that, and I'd like to know for future reference.

Hard starting, revving up without applying any throttle, staying revved up after letting off of the throttle, or dropping RPMs very slowly after letting of the throttle are sure signs that you have a lean condition. It could be caused by plugged jets, air screws opened too far, or an air leak somewhere. I don't know what made him spray the carb cleaner, but what I mentioned above are sure signs of problems.
