SCEADU Posted June 7, 2008 Report Posted June 7, 2008 On the stock carbs there is a hole on top of the slides . If you put the needle retainer in one way the hole is open. If you install it the other way the hole is closed. Which way?? Quote
okbeast Posted June 7, 2008 Report Posted June 7, 2008 I dono if it matters, but i've wondered the same thing. Quote
FireHead Posted June 7, 2008 Report Posted June 7, 2008 I dono if it matters, but i've wondered the same thing. It doesn't really matter as long as the tops are on the carbs. Quote
sinisterboo Posted June 7, 2008 Report Posted June 7, 2008 he's right, dont matter, as long as the rubber seals on the bottom of the caps are sealed up good, nothings gettin in. Quote
dajogejr Posted June 8, 2008 Report Posted June 8, 2008 WTF are you guys smoking?? yes...it does matter. That hole is a vent so the slide can go back down...without it...it can act like a piston and stick on you. The rubber seal will seal dirt and foreign matter out of the carb, but it needs that vent to let it lower down. The retainer for the needle should NOT cover that hole... And yes...I have 100% seen that happen. I completely broke the carbs down, lightly sanded the slide, made sure the idle kit screw hole that was drilled did not nick the other side of the carb. After riding for a few minutes...it would stick... About the third inspection I noticed that...and all was well.... Quote

If the cap on the carbs seal properly, then pressure inside the carb top is equal to pressure in the carb bore, in which case there can be no "piston effect" as you describe. That hole in the slide is actually a fluid drain to remove to allow condensate to escape. That slide sanding expedition you went on wasn't something I was real excited about either.............. Which pretty much ;eaves us at me asking you what you are smoking? Quote
dajogejr Posted June 8, 2008 Report Posted June 8, 2008 Gotta disagree...Mark. If I didn't experience it for myself 100% I'd agree with your theory...sorry. Quote
okbeast Posted June 8, 2008 Report Posted June 8, 2008 I'm not sure which side to agree with. From the engineering standpoint mark sounds right, and I don't really think that hole gets plugged off perfectly even if it is covered up, so it would still work how Dave says. And if the hole was plugged, and the carb cap on, you would actually be getting more pressure on the top side (less volume=more pressure) so it would want to force it back down hm Quote
mopar1rules Posted June 9, 2008 Report Posted June 9, 2008 isn't the spring under the carb caps, what returns the throttle slides? i know the first year i had my shee, i put those plates in, so they would plug that hole in the slide and i never had an issue. now this year when i cleaned the carbs, i put the plate in the slide, so it doesn't cover the hole. i don't know....it worked for me both ways. SCEADU Posted June 9, 2008 Author Report Posted June 9, 2008 Wow!!!! Damn noobs stirring up trouble. I was thinking that it may make your throttle pull harder if the hole was plugged. Any thoughts Quote
okbeast Posted June 9, 2008 Report Posted June 9, 2008 Wow!!!! Damn noobs stirring up trouble. I was thinking that it may make your throttle pull harder if the hole was plugged. Any thoughts There's not really enough volume there to make a difference. Besides like I said earlier, if it is GOING to make it harder it would have to seal off completely and I don't see that happening. Quote

I realize the scotch pad to the slide thing may be a good idea in certain cases, but I don't think it carries over to the slide drain hole thing. I also realize that you and I probably are not going to agree on this one. Quote

Any thoughts This issue is that I don't think you can completely close off that hole without going way out of your way................. and like was said earlier, you get the same end result no matter which way that gizmo is in there. Quote
dajogejr Posted June 9, 2008 Report Posted June 9, 2008 I didn't sand the vent hole....just the slide. Hope you didn't read that wrong.....LOL. Quote
