RoostRocket Posted March 26, 2007 Report Posted March 26, 2007 ok so heres the problem I just had the shee rebuilt and I am breaking the engine in. I have about 1 tank of gas through it and everything has been running perfect. but today I started hearing a noise a kind of grinding sound coming from the lower end cant really tell which side but it is louder on the stator side. so i checked my oil and it has these little air bubbles in it. when i give it gas the sound stops. not running bad just a strang sound. please help I dont know what it is. I changed the oil and there were no metal shavings or anything in it. Quote

Mine were bad (well actually gone when I got it apart yesterday) and it made a growling sound. Quote
RoostRocket Posted March 26, 2007 Author Report Posted March 26, 2007 yeah it is kind of a growling sound. ill have to work on it tomorrow shop light burned out!!! Quote
theshee Posted March 26, 2007 Report Posted March 26, 2007 I would put money on it thats what the problem is. If you have the $$ just get a billet basket and change the cushions. Easy fix, good luck with it! Quote
RoostRocket Posted March 26, 2007 Author Report Posted March 26, 2007 are the clutch basket cushions something that wear out fast? because cascade replaced everything that was slightly worn including clutch. Quote
FireHead Posted March 26, 2007 Report Posted March 26, 2007 Where exactly is the grinding noise coming from on the engine? There are a few things that can grind in the engine, such as a water pump, a bearing, a stator, gears, clutch push rod, etc. Do your head lights work? Are the bubbles in the oil out of the ordinary in one way or another. The gears moving through the oil will aerrate the oil fairly quickly. Do you notice any unusual amounts of smoke coming from the exhaust? Is there and coolant or water mixed in with your trans. oil? If you stick a pen magnet down into the oil fill port and all the way as far as it would reach, do you get alot of metal shavings stuck to it (some shavings are ok)? Quote

I am pulling the clutch case off now and will see if I can tell whats wrong.no coolant or water mixed in the trans oil. no smoke coming from the exaust either (bad smoke) just in case it helps my mods are pd cool head with 18cc domes. trued and welded crank, wiseco pistons first bore, k&n pods 310 mains and i belive 30 pilots, pd timing plate set at +4. i think thats it. theshee Posted March 27, 2007 Report Posted March 27, 2007 take the clutch basket out when you get in there and see how much play is between the gear and the basket. Your problem sound exactally like my clutch basket was. Quote

Let us know what you find behind the clutch cover. make sure you check and move every thing you can with the cover off (rotate the water pump, shift gears, turn the engine over, actuate the clutch, etc.). Quote
fastrthnu Posted March 27, 2007 Report Posted March 27, 2007 ever since I started using gearsaver,. its been really bubbly. doesnt seem like that could be good. Quote
RoostRocket Posted March 27, 2007 Author Report Posted March 27, 2007 ok so i got the clutch cover off and checked every thing and it seemed to be in good shape. the only thing that seemed odd was that the edge of the clutch basket closest to the motor looked like someone sanded it down with a very abrasive sandpaper. is that normal? once again there was no metal shavings in the oil at all. i couldnt pull the clutch apart because it started to get dark and i need to pick up some new halogen bulbs is it good to shift gears with no oil? if so i will do that in the light tomorrow. i talked to mike from cascade and he said not to worry to much about it because it sounds like the basket? the motor is running excellent im just worried about this noise thanks for all the help guys and ill try to take pics and move everything around tomorrow. fastrthnu Im using gearsaver too 80w maybe thats just how it is  Quote
FireHead Posted March 27, 2007 Report Posted March 27, 2007 ever since I started using gearsaver,. its been really bubbly. doesnt seem like that could be good. The air bubbles don't matter that much. Any thing that runs in an oil bath that is not in a vacuum will pull air into the oil. It more visible with some oils depending on the weight and chemistry. If you don't like it try a different oil. If you were a nerd you could try experimenting and adding your own surfactant to the oil you are using now, but I don't even think I am that big of nerd. :geek: Quote

Did you notice an abnormal amount of metal shavings in the bottom on the case or cover? How much rotary play is there between the clutch basket and the gear behind it? Shifting gears with no oil is no big deal. The only reason I worry about noises, is because they tend to lead to some sort of failure that strands me out in the dunes some where. On a dyno I'll run a motor until it breaks, but any other time I think it's best to find what is causing the abnormal noise. In the worst case scenario, I will be living within driving distance bey the end of next week. You could either bring the bike down to Portland or if you're not in a rush to fix it, I would be happy to stop by and look at it when I make a trip up to visit my parents in Auburn. Quote
RoostRocket Posted March 30, 2007 Author Report Posted March 30, 2007 so i got the shee put together and it fired right up. but with the same sound and thiss time i could tell that it was coming from the stator side cover. so I pulled the cover off again and the flywheel moved back and forth on the crank I didnt know if it should or not  . so I remembered what firehead said and turned on my lights and nothing... please help!!!
