As for the screen thing yes it can be done but alot of places that check for it are informed of things people try to do to get around the spark arrestor thing. For it to be legal it needs to have a US Foresty stamp on it. Quote

Places I've been they simply walk to the trailer and poke their fingers or stick to see if there's a screen there.. No thorough inspection.
