dnhyoung Posted June 25, 2005 Report Posted June 25, 2005 Well, I just got back from St. Anthony's today, and all I can say is that it's FREAK'IN AWESOME We got there Saturday Morning and didn't even set-up camp, we immediately headed to the sand. It took a little tuning to get the bikes running right, we had to drop 4 jet sizes , and could of posibly gone down 1 more but I would rather run a little rich than burn up something. We played on several of the smaller dunes to get the feel for the sand, and it is definitely different than the sand on the coast, It's more powdery. The razor backs backs are another thing. I don't think that anyone on the coast even knows what a razor back is. We are talking dunes with a point at the top. We spent Sunday and Monday exploring the rest of the dunes, We found Thunder Mountain, and Choke Cherry, and they are incredible dunes well worth their reputation. My first trip up Choke Cherry and I let off like I would at the coast, and ended up burying it only 3 feet from the top, but after that I cleared the hill every attempt. Thunder Mountain is an awesome dune to side hill on as wel as drag race up. You can ride the ridge for almost 1/4 of a mile as you peer over the other side of the dune. The Bowls are absolutely Huge. There are huge serpent like trails leading from one bowl to the next, up the face of one dune, back down, then up the face of another. We headed to Yellowstone Tuesday and Wednesday. We did the tourist thing on the way to Yellowstone on Thursday morning. We got there mid afternoon just as an impressive thunderstorm was brewing. We were sitting on the boardwalk around Old Faithful waiting for it to do it;s thing and watching the storm in the hills, when all of the sudden LIGHTNING hit the boardwalk about 150 feet from where we were sittiing with our friends. I guess no one was directly hit by the lightning but 11 people were injured due to there close proximity of the strike. Park rangers immediately evacuated everyone off of the boardwalk, and then we left. Talk about being scared as Hell. I packed up the family and beat feet to the truck, ducking our heads the entire way and headed down the hill towards Jackson Wyoming. The wives spent Wednesday am Shopping then we headed to back around to Idaho, only after we stopped at a little town Called Alpine Junction. The wife spent her money on clothes, and I spent my money on Fireworks. There are a couple of awesome little firework shops. They have everything you can imagine wether you want to blowing something up on the ground or 500' in the air. Now I can't wait for the 4th of july if not sooner...LOL We got back to the Trailers on Wednesday Evening just in time for an intense Microburst that dumped some intense hail and rain and dam near ripped off my awning. We got up thursday Morning and went out for a short ride before we loaded up to head home, and the rain from the night before made for some incredible traction. It was a terrific trip, and I would highly recommend checking out these dunes if anyone wants for some great riding and overal fun. Also, besure to check out Egin lake, It's a great spot to cool off in the afternoon.. Overall 2 thumbs up I will post some pics when I get them developed and scanned in Quote
Cotton eyed Joe Posted June 25, 2005 Report Posted June 25, 2005 Good to hear you liked it! I always stay at the Egin Lake campgrounds. It sucks now though because they brought in road base, and closed the sandy part of the camp ground to atv's. Nothing like it was 3 years ago when you could drive all over, and pick a nice shady spot between a couple of trees away from everyone else, but oh well...Its just more incentive for me to buy a trailer. I can't wait to take my project bike up Thunder. Don't know if I could drive all the way to Choke through the dunes on it. I might have to trailer it down the road and then ride it in on the trail they have. Quote
STLBILL Posted June 26, 2005 Report Posted June 26, 2005 Sounds nice. You didn't bring us any pictures? Quote
