Sorry guy's but I have to disagree. When talking about rich or lean conditions you are talking the fuel to air ratio being inducted by the engine. The amount of gas in the mixture is the variable as the amount of air is set by carb size and air filtration. I think we are all talking semantics though.

again, understood, BUT... concerning a two stroke motor in which the gas is premixed, rich or lean most commonly refers to gas to oil mixture for the purpose of lubrication to the top end. rich or lean can be changed without touching the carbs and adjusting air flow simply by changing the ratio of the premix. if you are premixing way rich, and say, fouling plugs or smoking a lot, adjusting air flow won't solve the problem. premixing way lean cannot be compensated by restricting air flow either. the premix is still lean meaning less lubrication for the top end and will still seize up or cause part failure.

fuel to air ratio is carbeuration, which falls more into the jetting phase of things. yes, if you have more fuel (properly mixed fuel) than air flow, it is rich. or higher air flow than appropriate, it is lean.

the key thing to this is that in this topic we are talking about the premixing ratio, not carbeuration/jetting. i could run a 400 main jet which may be rich in the sense of flooding the engine with fuel, but if i am premixing my 2-r at 100:1, i am still running LEAN for lubrication for the top end.

it just depends what your'e talking about, premix or jetting, as to what you call running rich or lean.

hope that clears this up.
