TeamRealtreeHD Posted September 5, 2010 Report Posted September 5, 2010 (edited) I have a 1-5 duneable over ride tranny. Ran great without a problem for 2 seasons... 80 gallons of gas burnt on it. Not a ton of time. I never backloaded it, and only shifted it under a load when I needed to on te really big hills around here from 2nd to 3rd. I took care of it, and babied it most of the time. Anyways, 2nd gear decided to let loose. It shifts fine into 1st, and goes into 2nd, but it just revs and doesn't move. 3rd gear is fine. All other gears are fine, but 2nd just revs and isn't there. It goes in and out of all gears fine. I will be ripping it open soon to see what happened, but I am curious as to what could have happened? I don't think it was the shift forks as it shifts in and out of gears smooth as butter still. But second gear doesn't engage, just revs. All other gears run and are good. Only real way to find out is to rip it open of course, but I'm just curious ahead of time what some of you might think here. I am also curious as to how ecpensive of a fix this will end up being, if 2nd gear is toast. I got the over ride from Kevin Herr at HJR, I assume WCR cut it. Not sure. Just curious if anybody had this problem before I rip into it... Edited September 5, 2010 by TeamRealtreeHD Quote
AKheathen Posted September 5, 2010 Report Posted September 5, 2010 most likely you will find a bad fork, or engagement dogs. i believe you can just slap a stock 2nd in there for $30. however, there could be a problem with shaft splines, drum channel, or drum alignment. I've seen the 2nd hump worn down before, causing the fork and gear damage. Quote
methyman Posted September 5, 2010 Report Posted September 5, 2010 You probably broke second gear which is common if your making some real power. Does it go into fourth gear? The fork the pushes the engagement gear into 2nd also pushes the engagement gear the opposite way to go in to fourth. Quote
TeamRealtreeHD Posted September 5, 2010 Author Report Posted September 5, 2010 Thanks for the input. Yea, it goes into 4th and 5th. I had to ride it home. Took it easy of course, but it goes into 3rd, 4th and 5th. Everything shifts good still, 2nd is just nothing. It doesn't move. I talked with a few guys about this so far and they all agree second is very weak on these trannys in conjunction with big motors. I am running a 421 cub. I am hoping the tranny can be fixed, if it is indeed second gear broke. I assume it can. Quote
AKheathen Posted September 6, 2010 Report Posted September 6, 2010 anything can be fixed, lol. billet 2nds are like 300, if you were thinking about that. some just throw a new stocker and fork in there every year or so without problems Quote
TeamRealtreeHD Posted September 6, 2010 Author Report Posted September 6, 2010 I've been thinking of doing the billet... but heard some stories of even them having problems. I am sure they are tougher than the second gear I just destroyed though. Quote
methyman Posted September 6, 2010 Report Posted September 6, 2010 If second gear is broken your going to have to check the shaft for run out. Basically if it is bent beyond Yamaha specs it will have similar problems with breaking gears. The run out limit is .08 mm. Quote
