Hi,

I'm picking up my first banshee tomorrow. Its a 99 and I'm paying 1400 for it. I think the bike needs a top end from what the guy is telling me but I figured someone on here should be able to help considering I know next to nothing about banshees! The guy I'm buying it from tells me that its tough to get it going by kickstarting it but it does pop-start and runs good once going (in the warm) he says it doesnt run great in the winter... (normal I guess?) It seems like it needs rings but I think I want to just do a full top end rebuild to make sure its ready to go for the summer. I was looking at sending it to full bore online to get the work done there. Has anyone used these guys? do they do a good job? any suggestions or reccomendations let me know. I'm excited to get my first banshee and I want to do what I have to and do it right so it runs good once spring rolls around. BTW it is mostly stock with toomey t5 pipes and they're jet kit, and airbox vents etc... any help or advice is appreciated!! thanks

First things first, Where are you located?

$1,400 for a banshee that needs a top end, is way over priced, especially for an essentially stock bike. Reconsider the price. I've seen complete bikes that need top ends go for as little as $700. Again, it's going to vary depending on where you're located. If you DO end up buying this bike, there are several site sponsors on here who do amazing work, and have awesome prices. Wilcard, and Herr Jugs Racing are just a couple.

There could be several reasons the bike is hard to start, if the top end is fine. DO A COMPRESSION CHECK prior to buying the bike. Someone could correct me on this, but I think a stock motor should be roughly 150-170psi per cylinder.

If the guy is saying "it doesn't run right in the winter", and you're buying it in the winter, be VERY cautious of this guy.It is NOT normal for a banshee to not run right in the winter. With proper jetting, the bike should run perfect no matter what the temperature outside is. If it's hard to start, and runs terrible when it's cold outside, it sounds like it might just be a carb problem, rather than a top end. But the only way to tell is to do the compression check. Go buy a tester if you don't have one, you'll use it a bunch.

In conclusion, just be very cautious of this bike, it sounds like it might be full of headaches. I hate to see new banshee owners on here complaining right after they bought a bike, that it's a pile of poo and they have to immediately dump a ton of money into it. You did the right thing, you came here first!!

i would keep looking for a better deal or bring a good compression tester with you , stock bikes usually run 110-125 psi average

well he says it runs fine once its started. Its just starting it thats the issue so it seems like rings but if I'm gonna do rings I might as well send the cylinder out and do a complete top end. I think it'll need a little carb tuning but I'm not too worried about that. and around here "cheap" banshees are IMPOSSIBLE to find! he wanted 2000 but I got it down to 1400. When I get there tomorrow I'll probably find some more stuff "wrong" with it to warrant an offer of 1000-1200...

Thanks sheerzr for the correction.

They all run fine once they are started... Banshees in halfway decent shape should start by about the 3rd kick. Where are you located?
