How much spring should I cut off on Mikuni carbs?

I have some Mikuni flatsides that the throttle is extremley stiff. I have cut about a 1/4 of the spring off but I wanted to know what you guys have cut off. I heard you can cut more than half off? Thanks for any help.

I've cut almost an inch off mine so far.

I replaced mine with some lighter springs from the local hardware store, and they have worked fine for the last 5 years.
