Ok i know the pickup coil is supposed to be gapped at .16-.20, but mine is set at .24. The reason? I pulled the stator cover to check the stator. while i was in there i checked the gap. it was over .35, no clue why. I just got the bike about a month ago. So I adjusted to .20 wouldn't start. tried .18 nothing. so i started going up at .25 it was hard to start, same as .23 but .24 apparently was the sweet spot. So WTF!

BTW the reason i was checking the stator was because it was a bitch to start cold. stator is good.

Whats your jetting, elevation and mods?

If it is a bitch to start cold but runs good once it is warmed up then you have a lean condition. Like the guy ask before me what are your pilot jets and what has been done to the bike?

the pilots are the stock size. i have 280 mains needle on the 3rd clip. mods include +4 degree key. full pro circuit exhaust, the head is shaved but not sure how much, boost bottle, weisco pro lites, std bore. if there is anything else, then i don't know about. these are what the previous owner told me was done. if it matters i run 32:1 amsoil interceptor 93 octane with octane booster mixed at 4 oz for 5 gallons. also it has engine ice for coolant. when i got the bike the other guys was running a race gas and 93 octane 50/50 mix.

oh yeah elevation is 107 ft above.

see if that helps

thanks in advance

you may have a poor connection on one of the wires to the pickup and @ 24 the wire is in the right position to get good enough contact. or a bad capacitor in the cdi so that it doesn't hold enough juice for a full length spark when it's triggered at the right gap, but over 24, it isn't getting a good trigger. also would be the same condition if the stator windings ar partially worn, or a wire/ terminal is corroded or almost broke between the stator/cdi. this is assuming you get good blue spark of course. btw, how do you know the stator is good? check the wiring and terminals at the cdi

yes i get nice blue spark. i checked all wires running to the cdi already everything is connected and no sheathing is cracked. i did 2 checks on the stator. one was a visual check for corrosion on and around that area and for the condition of the wires. all of the above was good. the second check was one i got off the forum about measuring the resistance and all that crap. everything was in the respectable numbers. so this leads me to say that the stator is "good". also since the headlights work fine (i know the power comes from a seperate section of the stator) and i get that good spark kinda speaks volumes, to me at least, that it is functioning properly.

Then again i may be a fcking idiot and the numbers lie and the stator really is getting worn.

But the real question is, do i pose a threat of trashing the bike with this current setting?

i can't say either way, and you don't sound like an idiot, but i would by not asking simple q's

could have something to do with the magnet in the flywheel, the cdi, or a funky pickup.

it could run forever, or something could go catistrophically wrong next ride. personally, when i find something out of spec, i need to know why.

yeah i agree with you, especially since i went from having the slowest bike in the garage, a blaster, to the fastest. this shee smokes a warrior, kfx450, z400, ltr450, 400ex, and with a little more love the outlander 800.

But anyway i will probably pull the stator cover off again, recheck everything and try it again at .20. Hopefully the .24 is a fluke and just happens to make the same "juice" as the .20 gap. if not then .24 it is.

thanks for your input.

BTW sometimes the simplest question yields the correct answer.

id bump your pilot to the next size up and leave the pickup alone if it runs fine. the little bigger pilot could solve your hard start. if somethings wrong with the pickup or the cdi or the stator it will quit on you eventually then you can diagnose it much easier
