  1. don't pull the top end off just yet. you said the carbs were very dirty. give them a good cleaning and then run the bike and see the difference. also do a compression check, to see the psi that the cylinders pull, before justifying tearing the top end down.

I've already done another compression check, wasn't so good, 100 on one, 60 on the other. Looked in the exhaust port on the low side and had a chip off the piston in between the ring landings and a piece of the ring was gone.

  2. Well, I would definitely like to not have to do anything to the bottom end unless I have to. I'm gonna have to hear the wife bitch about how much $$$ i'm gonna throw into this thing. Especially since I am planning on buying her a new quad next week. When I pulled it off the carbs were f-ing filthy. This thing was very poorly maintained.

  3. I guess I could have worded it differently. I'm wanting to get some of that power in the low end, even if I sacrifice it up top. I'm going to pull the carbs off and get a real compression test done tonight.

Well, got a craftsman compression gauge today at work. Got home, Tested, oooh, not so good. 100 on one, 60 on the other. Pulled the exhaust off, in the low side I see that the piston is chipped in between the ring landings, and a piece of the ring is gone. So what's everyone's opinion, I know I am going to have to bore and put a new top end, but what about down low? I also found a bolt (like the ones to hold the airbox, in the reed cage. God I got into a can of worms.

  4. tame it down??? haha its a banshee its supposed to be untame and crazy at all times

  5. Bro, go spend a couple of bux at sears and get a compression tester. They are pretty cheap, as in less then $50. Pull both plugs. Screw the tester into one of the plug holes, open the throttle wide open and kick it hard 20-30 times and see what the guage reads. Repeat for the other side. This will tell you where to start to figure out the poor running. If that checks out, I would then pull the carbs and clean them, especially if gas has sat in them for a long period of time. Doing the compression test will save you a lot of aggrivation. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

I checked compression before I bought it, about 150 on both. I am going to clean the carb up and see what happens.

  6. i would guess that it's the e-brake also. if you can't get it straightened out, unhook the e-brake. follow the wire from the perch to the junction under the rad cover and unplug it. you can also buy a block off plate so you can remove the clumpy assembly from the rear caliper, they are usually less than $10.

by the way, welcome to the site. if you need anything for your shee, this is the place to go to.

Yeah, I figured it out last night. I checked the wiring diagrams and found the things that could cause the ignition to do that. I got it back up today, ran it down the street on new plugs. It is not running great down low, get up high, and it feels like I dumped the clutch and takes off like a bat outta hell. Pulled it in the garage, and it puked coolant now. Assuming it is running really rich because of the way it is in higher rpms. Waiting on a manual to pull the carbs apart. It has Bill's pipes, and an open lid airbox. Guy told me he put something 80 jets in when it was installed. I asked 280 or 380, he said he couldn't remember. I am new to jetting quads, doesn't look to hard. Trying to find a good place to buy a kit. Any pointers? BTW, any pointers on taming this thing down a little for trailriding? And also going to need jets to use up to 10k feet in Colorado.

  7. Just picked up a 03 banshee at what I believe to be a steal. I test drove it yesterday and it fired right up, but felt like it had bad gas. Guy said he had year old gas in it, and it ran, just didn't run that well. Could go wot and it would hesitate, ping around, and then take off fairly well. Shut it off, told him i'd take it. Got it home today, put new gas in it. Forgot to put in the run position, flooded it out. Swapped plugs, old ones were sad. finally get it fired up, and it idles ok. Any throttle at all, and it falls on it's face. Just checked fire w/ a spark tester, and it is firing constant at idle, and when throttle is given, it starts blinking and shit. Any pointers on the cdi or stator? Just wondering if this is a common problem. Did the search, and came up w/ nothing specific to my problem. Forgive me for this being my first post, but I heard this is the place to go. BTW, Texas born and raised, 24, married, just talked my wife into a set of quads. Always had 200 honda 3 wheelers growing up, and polaris's in high school. Went broke going to school w/ my wife. Decided it's time to have some fun again. Thanks in Advance!
