wacko2000 Posted February 11, 2008 Report Posted February 11, 2008 drain your oil and coolent take the clutch cover off. then take that plastic cover off on the front of your clutch over then take the 4 or 5 screws out that hold the little brass colored plate off. then turn your clutch over over and push the gear down and take the dowl pin out of the impeller shaft then take the gear off and pull the impeller out. . check the seal. put the new impeller back and then the plastic gear back on the shaft and re instal the dowl pin. turn the gear and make sure it drops down or is already down on the shaft and down pin. then put all the covers back on and refuil liquids. very very easy Thanks man, how much do the impellers cost and do they really make that much of a difference.. Quote
yamaha04 Posted February 11, 2008 Report Posted February 11, 2008 they are around 80$ for a pro design. do a search on mod quad impellers they are buillet shafts and wear down on the seal and leak so spend the money the first time and gett quality. they are supose to work well. Quote
714banshee380 Posted February 11, 2008 Author Report Posted February 11, 2008 thanx for all the info well heres what happend we cruised over to comp in glamis this past weekend.... and after racing up the hill about 30 times in 85 90 degree weather i come back and see that my radiator is smoking so i shut her off and pour water over it cool it up then we decide to go to olds... on te way there the shee just starts missing a gear and revs up and had to shut her off. the radiator started smoking again... so then i rode her back to camp down sand highway really slow. I have a cool head 20cc domes i forgot to mention but what is this engine ice does it really make a difference? and what type of radiators do you guys recomend? Quote
yamaha04 Posted February 11, 2008 Report Posted February 11, 2008 engine ice is just coolent i run it but not sure of the temp difference becasue i dont have a guage. if you have overheated the thing i would definatly make sure your plastic stock impeller isnt melted. the rads most people get are PWR rads. i dont think thats your problem though i would get an impeller and run some engine ice make sure your jetting is good and your set. if you get a bigger rad but your impeller is @#$%ed its just going to do the same thing because its not going to move the coolent. save yourself. 300$ and do alittle detective work. theres lots of guys on hear that swear the stock rad is more then big enough on a properly running bike in the hottest of weather. yamaha04 Posted February 11, 2008 Report Posted February 11, 2008 try running it with your grill out it look crazy restrictive Quote
shanYE west Posted February 11, 2008 Report Posted February 11, 2008 I agree with yamaha04, I'd check out that impeller. I've seen the plastic gear break and also seen a few problems with the impeller itself. Quote
2strokespirit Posted February 11, 2008 Report Posted February 11, 2008 Never ever throw cold water over an overheated engine, its not a good thing.. I ride in temps up to 115 degrees. I can do about 2-3 big dune climbs than I am hot. I don't care who says an oversize radiator is a waist of money, but that was the only thing that could bring my temp down, the nice thing is the oversize Radiator brings the operating temp down in the summer to as much as 158. The nice thing about the oversize is that you can ride very slow and tight trails without overheating... there is nothing wrong with my jetting. Quote
inthemail Posted February 11, 2008 Report Posted February 11, 2008 1. sell me your grill. (not really but like it was said the dam thing looks like it could block a cumshot at speed) 2.dont even check the impeller. just buy the prodesign one and install it. 3.compression test, basic engine check for air leaks all that crap. mine revved way high because my carb top came loose. bad threads i bought the elimator kit and begone. airleaks can cause overheating, and most importantly. revving. the grill, its nice. but id pick up another plastic with the plastic grill for the hot days. and like the other guys said, NEVER POUR WATER OVER AN OVERHEATED OR HOT MOTOR! this can cause a whole disaster of problems, warp your head, crack your cylinders warp anything and everything and its just generally not the way to do things, rapid cooling like that may just be what seized your motor 2x before. Get a new grill or run it with it off.... 2. Buy an oversized radiator 3. Buy the pro design impeller. 4. Run engine ice (even though i heard you gotta do something weird once you run engine ice maybe mix it with something else?) I'm pretty positive im running 300's for my jets Quote
yamaha04 Posted February 11, 2008 Report Posted February 11, 2008 you dont have to do anything funny with engine ice. dont mix it just pour it in. http://www.rockymountainatv.com/productDet...339#prodDetails Quote

Its not a cooling problem, its your jetting!! A properly jetted bike will run all day long as hard as you want to run it in temps well over 100. I know I've had more than a few gas bikes and ride in temps over 100 all summer long. CHECK YOUR JETTING! Correct your jetting problem, them worry about getting better cooling components. Quote

CHECK YOUR JETTING!!!! A properly jetted bike will run all day long on whatever you want to do with it and never overheat. When I run mine on gas I can romp on it as hard as I want all day long, up and down any of the biggest dunes I ride without any worries. 2. Check your impeller for damage, and check the plastic gear for damange 3. flush your cooling system if everything checks out on with the impeller and gear 4. go back to riding once you fix your jetting problem! 5. if you want upgrades, which it seems you are hell-bent on getting, then do the impeller upgrade, then engine ice, then rad last. The stock radiator is more than capable of handling a properly jetted bike. Quote
Wildcardracing Posted February 11, 2008 Report Posted February 11, 2008 Yo guys may beat me up on this one, but from the factory my bike overheated like a mother if it was over 90 deg or on slower trail sections. My jetting was spot on (low mid and top end plug chop verified), I tried all the goodies and they all helped a little (cool head, billet impellor, engine ice). It wasn't till I burnt it down that I discovered how !@#$ed up my factory cylinder castings were, think I got a monday bike, lol. I did a nice cleanup port and polished the shit outa the exhaust side, got rid of all of the casting flaws and that is what finally solved the overheating issues for me. Best I can figure is the unusually rough casting in the exhaust wasn't allowing it to disipate the heat efficiently. Just somethin to think about. Quote

I just took off my carbs and flushed them out due to a lost air filter last weekend which invovled suking in a whole lotta sand. I ONLY ride in glamis so what do you guys recomend for my jetting I gave you ALL my motor mods... and you guys think 330's are to lean? I really don't think that's the problem Jetting is the last thing on my mind. I really understand all the other possibilities as in radiator cover is blocking air, melted plastic impeller, etc. But if you think jetting is what i need to focus on then I will what sizes do you guys think i should run? Quote
jbooker82 Posted February 11, 2008 Report Posted February 11, 2008 I would say that that grill has to be blocking about 90% of the air flow. Might as well put a pice of carboard over the entire radiator. Quote
