I had 2 motors apart at the same time last week one with a modquad impeller and the other with a prodesign. If I switched them from one case to the other they would rub, but if I left them in the cases they were in they didn't rub. So basically I think it is a crap shoot, and neither rub enough for me to worry out it. There is a small amount of free play in the shaft if the seal and bear are installed correctly. make sure your the washer on the gear side isn't too big where it might pull the impeller into the case. that's my $.02

Well, there is still some free play even with the washer and clip on the back side of the gear. If I push it in towards the outside of the clutch cover ans spin it, it wont rub at all, but thats the problem, when its running will it be "pushed in" and not rubbing or will it be rubbing?

I have been running it hard for the past 3 years with the washer in it. I had it apart this past spring and no other signs of wear.

So just one washer closest to the impeller itself? I will have to add a washer this weekend!!

yep between the bearing and the impeller.
I would think you mean between the seal and the impeller. So I tired this today with one washer and I was still able to push the impeller from the outside and caused it to rub. I went up to 5 washers and it still rubbed!!

Then I figured out that my water pump seal and bearing could probably be hammered in about a washers diameter further into the cover!! Maybe this is whats causing it to rub. I think if I hammer down the water pump bearing flush with the inside clutch cover, then it should line up nice and never rub?
