ranshee Posted October 18, 2007 Report Posted October 18, 2007 Really, for the most part its pretty simple. Drain your coolant and oil. Pull all hoses from the top end. Pull the head and gasket. remove the juggs. Have them honed or bored, whatever is needed. stuff some rags around the rods so nothing falls in the crank. clean surface for base gasket. push bearings out of pistons and remove them. clean rods for new bearings. Install new needle bearings. put on new pistons and make sure your new circlips fit into the grooves. You will see what Im talkin bout when you pull them apart. Also make sure you dont drop one into the crank. Hence the rags. you also need to make sure the gap on the rings is appropriate for you application. You can have the shop that hones your cylinders do this. Bring your top end kit with you when you have the cylinders honed. once this is all done, you will install the rings on your pistons. Make sure the gap is lined up with pin on the inside race of the piston. Then you'll need to take one of the rods up to top dead center and slowly put one jug on at a time. Once on you should be able to see if your rings are still centered through the intakes. Bolt down to proper torque specs. Make sure your head gasket area is clean for new gasket. Install new gasket then cleaned head. After this you should put on your reeds and intakes with new gaskets and do a leak down test. There are a lot of threads on this. I think rnbrad has a good one on this topic. Then put your carbs and exhaust on and break it in, of course after adding your coolant and trans oil of choice. The biggest thing you want to keep in mind is keeping every thing clean. Power wash your bike before doing this so nothing falls into your motor while doing the top end. Good luck and you'll its really a pretty easy as long as you take your time and have some patience . Quote
