Finding a good plating vendor in SoCal is next to impossible. I have tried many withou much success. They are right up there with heat vendors, grinders, and custom tool makers with regards to quality issues. Beyond that, there are several different types of chrome processes out there, so you should learn a bit about what you are paying for prior to choosing a shop. On top of that, used parts are almost always more expensive to deal with unless you can provide them to the vendor in a blasted and polished condition. Powder coating may actually be a better route to go for the general hobbyist, unless of course you hate yourself and like dealing with retarded folks. Quote

KaosBanshee44 Posted September 12, 2007 Report Posted September 12, 2007 Same here, i got rapped on a few things and i'm not even gonna mention what but yes it is very expensive to get the shit done. I was gonna get my new swingarm chrome with a few other things and said fuck it i'll get it powdercoated cause of that same reason. Quote

And some platers "street chrome" is better than others "show chrome". Those footpegs in show chrome would cost about 40 bucks at my plater. Quote
dajogejr Posted September 12, 2007 Report Posted September 12, 2007 I just waited about 7 or 8 weeks for my pipes, from Matt Shearer himself... Chrome Plater problems.... I can tell you it was worth the wait for the money I spent vs. the quality of the Chrome....but I was a little annoyed at times due to the wait... Good luck is all I can tell ya... Quote

Matt's in-house chrome setup has several problems...............I won't mention them here, because they know about the issues and really don't seem to care. Quote

Mark....do you mean in house as in he chromes at his place? The problem with my overdue pipes was his "new" Chromer sat on 20 sets for two weeks, much to Matt's dismay, then he picked them up and sent them back to his original chromer...hmm... Quote

D.G, the chrome on your pipes looked really good in those pics you posted up yesterday. I have to agree with firehead. Whomever is doing is matt's "production chrome" is really doing an awefull job. The set of shearer inframes that I have just picked up have the worst chrome job I have seen yet. :geek: Quote

I've seen older production chrome...yeah, it's not impressive at all...you really notice it around the bends and such... Quote

McKenzie Plating in Springfield, OR does beautiful work, and they do quite a bit of ATV stuff. To have those pegs plated will probably run $50 to $75 though, but you won't be disappointed in the quality. You can PM bk_banshee on here as well. He's got his foot in the door with a plater in Portland that also does good work, maybe a little cheaper and quicker too. Quote

He has a mexican in the back of his shop with a caustic tank and a plating tank. That is/was where some of the bad plating was coming from for sure. Quote

His deal with the plater in Portland is the only way you can get good work out of that shop. If you need chrome work done in OR, get hooked up with that guy. Do not bother trying to do it yourself with a vendor, it's not worth it. Quote
Lethaface Posted September 13, 2007 Report Posted September 13, 2007 Bigred told me about a place called Crown Plating.. Guy always awnsered his phone.. Had a 3 week turn around, and the pipes i sent him were rough!! They came back looking great!! He uses a double dip nickel and chrome.. Looked great!! I'm planning on sending him a batch of parts again within the next couple weeks.. he charged something like $180 for chromeing both inframe pipes and stingers.. Quote

I know they will run the best with my cub but I got a set of cpis instead maybe in 2 or 3 months i'll sell the cpis and switch. I heard CPI chrome is crappy now too. Quote
