Z04Banshee Posted July 7, 2007 Report Posted July 7, 2007 (edited) ok i have a 1989 banshee with toomey full exhaust, and lectron 36mm carbs. problem. cutting out/ not starting when warm- i have replaced the spark plug caps, the plugs also. i have beaten it and pulled the plugs out. and they are wet! i drained to oil cause i thought i might have tomuch, then added exactly 1.50 quarts of new oil and she still gets wet. when motor is cold, it will fire on the 2nd or 3rd kick, but when warmed up, i would be lucky to popstart it. but the cutting out is constant, it backfires and bogs down horribly i would assume that both these effects are due to a single cause. i am going to try to gap the plugs later .020 i believe. but anyone have anyother tips? i just wanna ride! thanks Edited July 7, 2007 by Z04Banshee Quote
blowit Posted July 7, 2007 Report Posted July 7, 2007 Sounds like a fuel problem  Sounds ignition related to me. Not sure why to trans oil would affect the running though?? If you have not tried new plugs, you need to do it now. that is the first step in any engine miss. Brandon Quote

fastbanshee8 Posted July 7, 2007 Report Posted July 7, 2007 Try leaving the choke on, after it's warmed up, and see what that does to it. If it runs better, then your carbs are jetted lean, and if it's worse, then you are to rich. Backfiring is a sign of being lean, but it can be caused by dirty carbs, to lean of jetting, or restricted fuel flow. Quote

Brandon why would the plugs be wet then? it just sounds like its not getting enough gas when the R's go up. I dunno though. Time for trail and error testing Quote
fastbanshee8 Posted July 8, 2007 Report Posted July 8, 2007 Have you ever changed the packing in your silencers? I know it may sound like a dumb question, but if the packing is plugged up, it will make them run like shit. It happened to my brothers Shee several years ago, and it was having some of the problems that yours is having. Quote

Time for trail and error testing Wet plugs and backfiring is a sign of ignition miss that loads the pipes up with raw fuel. Not hearing it, it is just a guess but I have seen a bunch of people chase jetting ghosts over ignition related issues. I know those Lectron 36s are big daddy carbs so I hope he has the motor to use them. Brandon Quote
jmd0346 Posted July 8, 2007 Report Posted July 8, 2007 Wow. You changed the oil. The tranny oil has nothing to do with the crank case/ combustion chamber. Thats what the premix oil is for. Your problem sounds alot like an ignition problem. Did the bike run ok before and now just start doing this? What other mods does it have? Those carbs are meant for fairly modded engines. Quote
Z04Banshee Posted July 8, 2007 Author Report Posted July 8, 2007 well the motor is bored to the max i just got the quad 2 days ago, when i bought it (500 bucks) i could start it, but couldnt drive it due to the clutch perch being busted. so i bought a new perch and this happened on the first ride. i regapped the plugs they were way off but that wasnt the problem. local atv store said it sounds like the black box witch the plug wires run from is bad (ignition coil i believe?) does that sound like a pretty fair guess? You know, that is one of the easiest parts to install and rarely actually bad. If you remove the coil wires and caps and test just the coil, that will tell the story. Most of the time, banshee coils show bad because of the wires or caps and not the actual coil. Keep in mind that bored to the max does not mean much to us. Drag, high duration porting and drag pipes should be considered when using those carbs. I would not have any bigger than a 33mm on that motor. Sounds like a basic 350 with a 90 over bore but not sure of your setup there. Brandon Quote
