has anyone done the grease zerk mod and if I do it should I put in two zerks or one and where should I place them I have never seen any one with them but heard that the earlier shees came with zerks installed  don't forget to get to LS in the fall for the fall ride[/i] :woot:

Just put the zerk in the center facing rearward so you can get the nozzle on it. I usually grease the axle where it goes through that steel sleeve when I put it together.

The trick here is that an OEM carrier uses a shielded ball bearing setup that does not benefir from greasing as a tapered roller bearing setup might as you would find in a boat trailer for example. However, installing zerks on the main body of the carrier may help prevent runst and for contaminants and water out pst the seals.

In answer to your question, just stick the zerks anywhere on the main carrier body that won't foul adjustability of the carrier.

I drilled & tapped my carrier like Snop did, centered pointing straight rearwards. I also tapped & drilled at the top center for a small bolt for a vent; pull the bolt, pump grease in, replace bolt. I used the little short bolts like ATV/MC batteries use, has a phillips in the center and hex on the outer. Anyway like Firehead said the stock bearings are sealed, you need to pry the inner shields off both bearings to get grease to 'em. But you'll want to take it all apart anyway to do the drilling & tapping so ya don't get shavings & shit in there...

i have tapped and installed zerk's on several carriers but as fire said the carrier bearings are a sealed design so the zerk is just a back up incase your seals go shithouse. if the seals go then having the housing pumped full of grease will just help that much more in the event of an inner bearing seal failure.....

personally i dont think our shees need zerks. our banshees are not high speed porsches. nobody here rides at over 70 for more than a minute, so the bearings are never loaded enough to get super hot.

a drawback to a zerk is the fucking mess it creates when you need to remove the axle.

i would rather remove the axle every few years and pop the seals on the bearing and clean/regrease them. assemble the carrier bearings and axle with a light coating of antiseize and its good to go for another few years. thats what i do with most bearings, even the bearings on the deck of my lawnmower. just pop em out every few years and pull the seals off, regrease and put back together.

i could see putting a zerk on if you guys were into mudding or riding through water for extended periods, but our banshees are not really made for that, and almost no one goes in water or mud, except chase.

You're right. That's what you call "preventative maintenance".

so you think it might actually be worth it for me to put in a zerk fitting with all my mud ridding? thats basically all ride with it down in the everglades

I would highly recommend it, because when riding, the bearing carrier gets hot, and if you go through any kind of water, that's over your axle, it will cause the water to be drawn in past the seals. I know, because it happened to me years ago, and it ruined the bearings pretty quickly from rust. The extra grease in the carrier will help keep the water out, plus by removing the inner seals on each bearing, they will always be lubed, unless you run completely out of grease in the carrier. I've had the grease zerk in my carrier for almost 10 years now, and the bearings are still in good shape.

well we just rebuilt the rear end like 2 weeks ago and coated everything with 'waterproof' grease and put it all back together, maybe a zerk fitting might be in the near future as we are thinking of putting one in our ds 650
