JJgage30 Posted June 7, 2007 Report Posted June 7, 2007 I recently purchased a 89 banshee from a friend. I cleaned the carbs and replaced the jets. The problem I am having is the banshee will not start on its own. It needs a shot of starting fluid and then once it is started it will not idle. Also the throttle seems to stick and bike seems to high rev and then try to die???? Could the slides be sticking. Also it seems that it will dump some fuel out of the overflow tubes. I have calibrated the floats and rebuilt the carbs. Any ideas on the idle issue?? I have set the idle screw as described in the manual. 2 turns.. I am kind of new with the 2 stroke Bikes so any help would be appreciated... Quote
dajogejr Posted June 7, 2007 Report Posted June 7, 2007 Check the compression first off, especailly if it's an 89. Second, are these stock carbs? Do they have the TORS still on them? Factory guidelines for idle speed/screw adjustments are just that...a guide...your bike will vary. Quote
JJgage30 Posted June 7, 2007 Author Report Posted June 7, 2007 I do not want to sound dumb but I know I am anyway. How do I know if I still have the TORS. WHat does it look like?? Compression is good and checked. They are stock carbs because the guy I bought it from said they were. I appreciate your help. dajogejr Posted June 7, 2007 Report Posted June 7, 2007 Ok...If I'm going to slow, tell me to shut up and fast foward...deal? How much was the compression? What did it read on the gauge? What kind (brand of) gauge was used... Stock carbs...sheesh, I'm trying to think of a picture link for them. TORS are the factory Throttle Overide System from the factory, which are garbage. Do you have two large appendages on top of each carb, with a knurled knob on them? They'll have wires plugging into them as well... Or do you have two brass screws, one on the outside of each carb? I'll see if I can find some pics to help... Do they look like this? The TORS are the boxes on top of the carbs... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/YAMAHA-BANS...124990342QQrdZ1 Quote
JJgage30 Posted June 7, 2007 Author Report Posted June 7, 2007 I took the bike to Yamaha of Atlanta to check compression and they just said it was normal. I have the two idle screws. The top of my carbs have the twist knobs but do not have the metal switch looking boxes as pictured on the ebay motors auction. Thanks by the way for trying to help me.. dajogejr Posted June 7, 2007 Report Posted June 7, 2007 I still wouldn't trust a dealer, unless they gave you an actual number, not just "it's normal".... Two simple things. Make sure carb slides are on the right carb. If you look in the back of the carb, you should see a round type opening on the back of the slide, NOT flat. If it's flat...the slides need to be swapped from one carb to the next. Second, there is a round rubber tube, say 2 to 3 inches long that connect one carb to the other, opposite the choke on the left carb. Make sure that tube is in place... That's a good starting point. JJgage30 Posted June 7, 2007 Author Report Posted June 7, 2007 I do not have the hos between the two carbs. Would that make an erratic idle and throttle sticking problem... dajogejr Posted June 7, 2007 Report Posted June 7, 2007 It would cause what you're saying and more. Also...that idle screw adjustment only holds true for stock carbs WITH the TORS still on, which you don't have. The brass idle screws you have on the sides now, eliminating the TORS, will have to be adjusted by ear... Quote
JJgage30 Posted June 7, 2007 Author Report Posted June 7, 2007 Do you know where to find the diagram to where to hoses hook up??? Thank you so much for helping me... It would cause what you're saying and more. Quote
dajogejr Posted June 7, 2007 Report Posted June 7, 2007 It's in a clymers manual...but I'll try my best to describe it. If you were to look at the choke on the left side, left carb...and stick a rod all the way through it to the right side carb.... You'll see two small outlets, facing each other. you'll need I believe a 3/16 vacuum hose, fuel line, etc. Doesn't have to be fancy...just seal. Put that in place. Quote
