i am thinkning of going to a bigger motor in my shee this fall, just wondering if a cheetah or a cub set up would be of interest to me for trail riding. the trails i ride are open and not tight woods type trails. ive seen a lot of talk about cheetahs and cubs being too much for trail riding, but what would be the advantages and disadvantages if that is what i was looking to do to my bike. and if there are better options what are they??

Its all what you can get used to and what you can handle. A Banshee is never gonna be a great trail bike I dont care what you do to it but you can manage. In the opens and striaghts makes up for the short comings of the trails. You can wrestle it through the trails but when its sucks your face back on a straight you know what its all about.

so far i really like the pipes, and as you both know they sound great

cub cylinders are NOT trail friendly!!!

 

i would go with a good strong woods port. you can get a good reliable 60hp with the right porting, pipes and carbs.

 

id recommend the woods porting, toomey t5's and 33mm pwk with some clamp on air filters if you dont get into any water. id also run a nosshead with some higher compression domes and bump the timing up to +4. this will require the use of a higher octane fuel but itll be worth it..

i didnt read this before..but i disagree..my brothers old setup was a stock stroke eric gorr woods port. 33mm pwk, t5's, stock airbox, noss head with 19cc domes..this setup made excellent power and torque. this bike was awesome in the trails. it was a stock length swingarm bike and it handled fine. the power was perfect and i could ride that bike just as easily as a new yfz450. you most definetely CAN set a banshee up to be an awesome trail bike. sure, its no yfz450. but you can make a banshee a great trail bike, just not with a set of cun cylinders..remember, they are NOT trail friendly!! :thumbsup:

this is an undeniable fact. you will be much better off getting your stock jugs ported like loco said, and you would be much happier. the only other thing that i would say is, if you like the DMC's stick with them. there probably isn't much of a difference, not enough to swap to T5's IMHO. the DMC's may even have a slightly smoother power delivery than the T5's, which should help with traction. i've had ported stock jugs and i now have a 421 cub. the cub is a blast in the open but the power delivery is irritating in the trails, it's the wrong type of power. sure you may be able to tame it slightly, but why? not enough to make it trail friendly IMHO.

looks like the majority vote goes to porting my jugs then. i talked with jeff at FAST and he said hes pretty booked up for most of the summer so looks like fall time the jugs are off to get ported.

you don't have to switch to t5's, the 916's are every bit as good as the t5's. plus i think they sound better, nothing sings like a 916.

i talked to jeff at FAST and he said to go with a strong woods port, so that is the plan for this fall. but this friday i am ordering the noss coolhead and an adjustable timing plate, then next in line will be vforce 3's and maybe some bigger carbs. so thats what is on the list for Pre-porting upgrades.
