kubiac3 Posted October 15, 2006 Report Posted October 15, 2006 So Ive read the clymers manual about 20 times on how to adjust the clutch, did it about 13 times. Still clutch doesnt work correctly. When I pull the clutch in and try to push the bike it doesnt roll. First I pulled the push lever that goes into the case over to the marking on the cases and lined it up, then screwed in the adjustment on the front of the clutch hub till it hit the clutch push lever. Then held the adjustment screw there and tightened down the jam nut. Now after I did this I have a huge amount of free play, I adjusted the free play to what it says in the manual and still bike will not roll when clutch is pulled in. Please tell me if I missed a step or did something wrong when adjusting it. I put on a new clutch cable, clutch basket, inner hub, and push rod and ball. Also the push rod goes into the gear befor the ball does correct? Just wondering if I may have reversed them which is causing my problem. Im completely irritated with it. Quote
dawarriorman Posted October 15, 2006 Report Posted October 15, 2006 Okay. What you do is turn that rod with the phillips end until the clutch arm lines up with the arrow. Thats with you pushing on the clutch arm. (a little past the arrow, 1/8 ", brings the engagement point in further). Now, you hold the rod in that exact position while you tighten the locknut. Then you adjust the freeplay until its right. You want the freeplay in the lever all the way out before you adjust it. Quote
csrmel Posted October 15, 2006 Report Posted October 15, 2006 you clutch plates could just be hanging up. it happens to alot of wet clutch motors. it seems like after sitting overnight the plates stock to the discs. Quote
Justintoxicated Posted October 15, 2006 Report Posted October 15, 2006 (edited) First loosen the adjustment on the cluch lever all the way or at least enough that there is a good deal of adjustment left in it. Then just get the arrow alignment close. It does not have to be perfect but you don't want you cluch lever to be extreamly loose. (adjust the nut untill there is a bit of free play in the cluch lever but it will still engauge). Lock down the nut in that position. Once it is adjusted correctly you should be able to adjust out any slack in the clutch lever with the adjuster. Again the arrow does not have to line up perfect. It's a compormise between having the lever adjusted and arrows aligned but if your locking down the nut when the lever is compleatly loose you will likely not be able to adjust all the slack out of the lever and your clutch will not engauge when you pull it in. So Most important is to have the cluch (I did mine all the way loose) set so there is plenty of adjustment to tighten out the slack when locking down the nut (clutch should have tension when pulled in but can have a little free play in it before locking down the nut). This way you can adjust out the bit of slack, Don't worry about the arrows being perfectly lined up. if they are off a bit it is ok, as long as the arm and clutch are functioning properly. Make sure you are locking the nut in place with the clutch lever adjusted all the way stiff (adjustment knob next to clutch rather than spaced out from it).
