knoxvillebanshee Posted August 9, 2006 Report Posted August 9, 2006 Hey, I am new to the board, but I have read many of the topics here and I am amazed at how helpful this forum is! Anyway, I had ACL surgery three weeks ago, and to pass the time while being somewhat incapacitated I decided to rebuild my banshee. Two years ago I purchased an 87 banshee that has a 95 motor and 2000 plastics. Within two weeks of ownership, one of the floats in the left hand stock carb broke. I decided to buy new carbs instead of fixing the stock ones, and I went with the cpw 30mm carb kit. It came with what I think were 55 and 155 jets? Anyway, I began having problems fouling plugs after installation. However, before I could get the jetting fixed, my friend's kid was riding the banshee one day when the radiator cap failed and blew the engine. I had to go to .80 over to fix the scoring in the cylindars. I had a weisco top end kit installed last summer, and was back up and running. However, I was still foulding plugs. The shee then sat in my garage for 8 months until a few weeks ago. Here's what I have done: 1. Removed, sanded and painted the stock plastics with Krylon Fusion paint. I was skeptical, but my plastics looked so bad I thought I'd give it a try, but it looks awsome now. I went with black, and then fabricated some decals with some mock carbon fiber decal material I purchased from a local sign shop. I put a matching black seat cover on the shee too. I also painted the jugs and touched up the frame. 2. I installed a noss cool head with 21 cc domes. 3. I installed a fmf sst exhaust system I bought off of ebay w/ sst silencers 4. I reinstalled the 30mm carbs and K&N cone filters that came on the bike. The jets that came in the carbs were 155 / 55's 5. I replaced the seals in the crank case covers and changed all fluids. 6. I am running 40:1 93 octane gas w/ motul oil. 7. I have installed a new set of douglas wheels and Razr tires front and rear. Now, that being said, I started the bike today and ran it up the road. While the bike seems much faster, I have periods of hesitation at all areas of the powerband. It got to the point where the motor would idle fine and then just quit like it ran out of gas. It also started doing that when I was driving it up the driveway at high throttle. It would just surge and then die. I checked the plugs, and they were not white - not black, but sort of grey. I've probably got 20 hours on the new bore, so I'm running 40:1 fuel/oil mix. I don't have much smoke at all from the exhausts. It feels like the bike is starving for gas, and that is why it is dying. It starts every time after dying. Now, I planned to take the shee in to a local shop and have it jetted next week anyway. However, I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions as to what is causing the hesitation. Would the new mods mess the jetting up so bad that it would cause such severe hesitation? Further, do the mods I have listed seem to match up, or do I need to change something / add a new mod? I just want the bike to be fast, somewhat reliable, and good for both running trails and riding in open fields. I appreciate anyone reading this and giving suggestions. I've read threads where people say their shees are pulling wheelies in fourth gear, and I wonder, if jetted correctly, how fast should my bike be. Anyway, I'm just excited to have things coming together! 5. Quote
Lethaface Posted August 9, 2006 Report Posted August 9, 2006 The best way to check your jetting is with a plug chop..Basically put some new plugs in and gapth them properly..Then run it up the road get it to top gear and shut her down..From there just check your plugs.. Lean condition is a white plug, and of course a rich condition is a black plug..You are looking for a nice golden brown color.. Also you might wanna check out your reed petals..A chipped/cracked reed will make the bike do some strange things.. BTW your screen name wouldn't happen to mean knoxville Tennessee would it? If so i am in crossville about 65 miles from you..Got any good riding spots to speak of?? Quote
knoxvillebanshee Posted August 9, 2006 Author Report Posted August 9, 2006 Yep, I'm in Knoxville. We ride at Royal Blue towards Onedia, TN. Also, of course, Winrock is unbelievable. I'm not happy, on my way to work this morning, I looked under the shee, and its leeking oil from the crank case cover again. It's seeping from the lower left corner. I added a new gasket and siliconed it and everything! Oh well, I guess I'll have to give it another go tonight to seal her up. Quote
