Airsmitty Posted July 31, 2006 Report Posted July 31, 2006 hey guys! I was riding my banshee fresh off a rebuild and being a young dumb kid i didn't think to retorque the headbolts after a bit o riding. the head came loose and i was leaking coolant so i tightened it with a wrench and limped it back to camp. I went and got the head properly torqued and it ran great for a while then i look back and there's a huge cloud of white smoke following me. I took it apart ti find that hy-tech atv had used gasket seal instead of my inner o rings. So i took it home and bought new o rings for my trinity head and ran great but there was still a hint of coolant leaking into the left cylinder. I took it all apart again and put my stock head on which had no problems when i last used it, and shee's still smoking out of the left bank. I really don't think both of my heads are warped. So my question is, where else can coolant get into the motor? Could i have blown a base gasket? And can the Jugs be warped? Thanks alot! Quote
racer Posted August 1, 2006 Report Posted August 1, 2006 base gasket has nothing to do with this scenario. yup, you can warp the jugs. pull them off, and remove all the studs. then take them to a machine shop to have them lapped. if you wanna try it yourself you need a thick piece of glass and a large piece of fine grit sand paper. i think i used 240 last time. place the jugs, head sealing surface down on the sand paper, which is on top of the glass to assure that its <FLAT!>. flat is the key word hear, you are looking for dead true flat. so the thicker the glass, the better. then move the cylinders in a figure 8 motion on the grit. that motion is necesary for it being flat. use a good tapping oil or similar lube on the grit. another thing. when i have trouble getting my head to seal i leave the base studs loose and torque the head. then torque out the base studs. Shee-Male Posted August 1, 2006 Report Posted August 1, 2006 if it's a bad head or warped it will usually overheat and push out a bunch of coolent. Also be very careful, because if coolent gets into the cylinder you can hydo lock it and cause big damage. Quote
Airsmitty Posted August 2, 2006 Author Report Posted August 2, 2006 thanks a ton guys! as i said before i don't think the heads warped because it does the same thing with the stage 4 head as it does with the stock head that had no problems when i took it off. I think i just broke the seal because those tards used gasket seal to seal my head on. I'm gunna try loosening the jugs and squeezin that head on before i get it lapped. THanks alot guys i appreciate it. I'll keep you posted Quote
racer Posted August 2, 2006 Report Posted August 2, 2006 if youre taking things to the shop have it all lapped. the head shells, the jugs, the domes, anything that has a mating surface need to be flat enough to cut drugs on. no shittin. Quote
