Dinner Posted July 30, 2006 Report Posted July 30, 2006 Just wondering how many of you are hillclimbing out there?? And i am wondering whether you like to hit the hills in 3 WOT or 2 WOT? I was out the other day climbing the hills in the pics below and was in 2 WOT. I can get up them easy, just wondering what you guys prefer, your opinions, etc. Thanks, Dinner Quote
locogato11283 Posted July 30, 2006 Report Posted July 30, 2006 2nd gear...when i run the competetive hillclimbs i always start in 2nd, and most times shift to 3rd while wide open with my duneable override. its been so long since i rode a banshee in the trails and the regular hills its not even funny. i used to climb in 2nd or 3rd depending on whether or not it was from a dead stop or a run... BigRed350x Posted July 30, 2006 Report Posted July 30, 2006 I want to try that hill so bad! How do you like that duneable override? I think I want to get one of those. Best of both worlds. Quote

I have only tried 2nd gear so far so maybe ill try third the next time i'm there. The first 10-15 feet of the hills are really rough, almost like whoops from everyone accelerating. So maybe ill smooth them out and try 3rd....Do you think ill be able to pull all the way up the hills with pretty much almost stock? I'm just curious cause i dont want to bog and roll down the hill  Thanks Dinner Quote
FasterThanU90 Posted July 30, 2006 Report Posted July 30, 2006 those hills id hit in 2nd usually longer dunes/hills ill end up havn to shift into 3rd if u start to lose power just dowshift but u probly already knew that , i hope.. Quote
dawarriorman Posted July 30, 2006 Report Posted July 30, 2006 Mostly 2nd on the hills here. Most of them are in the 60 ft range about 70 to 80 degrees, enough you can't climb up them on foot. Don't have much of a run on most of them. Depends on the top too, alot of them are vertical the last 10-20 feet, and third gear would send you flying off the top, and generally down the other side. I'll try and get some pics sometime this week if I can, the place has closed down, and most of the really insane hills are under water now (they stop pumping the water out when they get done mining). Still fun though. Never hurts to start in 3rd if you can, just don't downshift too early and kill your momentum, or too late and come out the power. Quote

Yea i already new that :thumb: Never hurts to start in 3rd if you can, just don't downshift too early and kill your momentum, or too late and come out the power. Yea ill probably give it a try next time im there. I have 22" Dirt Devils on Steel Rims, so i'll just have to play around. I'm not to sure how tall those hills are either, and the degrees change on all of them. Ill get some measurements next time too Edited July 30, 2006 by Dinner Quote
RIPPEN Posted July 31, 2006 Report Posted July 31, 2006 Depends on how tight the trail is... Red Iam sure can relate.. I have ran a certian hill in 2nd and been going so fast around the curvy ass trail that you come up on two wheels. Most of the hills we climb have NO run at at all but after that its a matter of going as fast as you can, so it just depends on the hill I guess  RIPPEN Quote

You start ON the face of the hill, no run at all. Most of them you are in 1st gear all the way up. Yeah, you caan catch 2nd but you will be eating tree for lunch or find yourself upside down. A lot of our hills are too steep to catch another gear as well. You might think you can, slam it into the next gear and it will bog out and by the time you kick it back down you have lost all your momentum and are dead on the hill and have to deal with backing down between trees... Here's a video of the hills Rippen and I do... (sorry rippen I don't have video of your new setup that I can pull clips from. If you would get your butt out here we could fix that!) http://media.putfile.com/hills-74 Quote

Hey, at least you can back down your hills. Quite a few of the ones in the clay pits are well... clay. You don't get enough traction to stop on the hill, you don't make it, your coming back down in a baad way. I've seen a few quads that were total losses, engines ripped free of mounts, swingarms and a-arms broke off, frames bent like hell. Seen a couple people get life flighted out of there. Quote

RED and I know of what your talking about there.... Red has a nasty ass hill on his ranch that gave me the biggest case of "pucker factor" I have probably ever had. Animalman294 Posted August 1, 2006 Report Posted August 1, 2006 I've watched guys go up those hills and some of them are pretty hairy. I don't have anything like that around here though, so I've never tried it. The steapest that I have been on is how steap nature can pile sand before it sloughs off under its own weight............. :yelrotflmao: Quote

I told Rippen before he even tried it the first time... Make sure you go all the way up or don't try it, because it will suck a huge nut if you stop half-way up it. So Rippen runs up it all the way the first time no problem, then the second time gets mid-way up the hill and loses it. Ends up trying to back down the hill. I was laughing my ass off and he was shitting his pants. Its no small hill either. I bet rippen would love to come up and give it another shot now that he's had his engine worked... Quote
Animalman294 Posted August 1, 2006 Report Posted August 1, 2006 It's funny watchin' some of them try the vert's and not quite make it, because I didn't know the human eyeball could get that big........................... :baseball_bat: Quote
