Finkshee Posted June 29, 2006 Report Posted June 29, 2006 I just purchased a 1999 Banshee it is all stock except for a K&N filter and FMF fatty pipes with powercore 2 silencers. I was wondering what would be the best mod I could do for around $600?If ported where and what type? I want the bike to still remain dependable and trail rideable but gain bottom end and top speed if able. Quote
trueraiderfan Posted June 29, 2006 Report Posted June 29, 2006 Well i am not an expert yet but I have herd the FMF are not a great pipe If it were mine i would take off the FMF's sell them put on toomey t-5's or t-6's and get a port job. but you can also get some v-force reeds cool head bigger carbs, Later on. Man there is alot of things ou can do that will keep the compression down and keep it a dependale ride hope this helps ya. Like I said I am not an expert yet but I am learning. Quote

VForce 3 Reeds, Cool Head with some smaller domes to bump up compression, Adjustable Timing Plate. I would do that before I got porting. Porting will run you anywhere from 250-600 depending on who does it and what kind of porting. Then you should get bigger carbs to take advantage of the porting. That would put you outside your budget more than likely. I would get the reeds, head, and timing plate, then spend the extra money on some other misc. parts you might want. Head over to www.rockymountainatv.com and browse around. I spend around $1200 with them a year on random crap. Get yoruself a set of rims/tires or something. Quote
trueraiderfan Posted June 29, 2006 Report Posted June 29, 2006 sorry I did not see the part about where and what typ of porting I am not farmilar with what typ is the most dependable but still gives you good power for trails one of the other guys will know for sure though. Quote

A dune or play port woudl be best for you. If gorr were still around I would tell you hands down for what you want a Gorr woods port would be best, but he isn't in the states any more. Any of the mild port jobs would be good for you, just DONT get a drag port it would kill you for trails. They are all relaible and dependable, its just up to you who you want to do it. Quote

I dont know where you heard that but Fatty's are pretty much the same performance wise as T5's.... T6's should only be used if you dont ever plan on porting the bike. Keep your pipes and do what the others suggested, a coolhead, reeds, maybe lighten the flywheel and get an adjustable timing plate to move the timing up to +4. If you are interested in the timing plate I actually have one that I just pulled off a bike that I would be willing to sell cheap.. pm me if interested. Quote
decon Posted June 29, 2006 Report Posted June 29, 2006 keep the fmf's for trail riding, real good pipe...then do as the others suggested, reeds/cool head/timing...then down the road I would go for a MX port Quote
dirt-riceburner Posted June 29, 2006 Report Posted June 29, 2006 Trail porting generally is the cheapest compared to other porting. I had mine done at RB racing. He is one of the most inexpensivest and does great job with fast turnaround. He can also tell you what would be recommended for your type of riding and all the post porting set up. His number is 517-388-3662. I don't know where you are but I sent it UPS and got it back all in one piece. Quote
Hilarious Posted June 29, 2006 Report Posted June 29, 2006 (edited) If you go with a port job, you will be replacing your top end too. Rings, pistons misc. gaskets. That will eat up your 600 bucks. Check your compression to see what shape your top end is in and go from there. You will most likely be waiting in line to get your port job and that can cost you some riding time. If your top end is in good shape, like others have typed, get a Noss head, adjustable timing plate and some good reeds & cages. Keep the fattys, they are good pipes. And if your K&N is a clamp on, which it should be, pull the airbox lid off if not already done so. It outta run pretty good with all that. If you have any money left over, get some bling on that thing. :thumb: Edit: After all that, be a good idea to get some better suspension too. Edited June 29, 2006 by Hilarious Quote
