Okay, here is the situation. I was at Waynoka this weekend and I did a little Drag Racing, but not much (maybe 10-12 runs over 2 days). The non the last ride of the weekend I was swopping through the big dunes hauling a$$. I was in 4th gear ripping along and down shifted hard into 3rd as I began to slow up a big sweeping dune. I ripped through it but once I got into the open My bike would not shift. My shift lever will only do 2 things. It will go down into 3rd (but it stays down) and it will go up into 4th (but it stays up). I rode it back into the campgraound with no weird noises or grinding. What do you guys think I did? Is this going to be a huge job? How expensive do you think it will be?

Some guys told me it could be a shift Fork???

I'm pretty clueless about the exact details of our transmissions, but I have a good mechanical background. So, I appreciate your help. This may be a dumb question but, You are talking about the sidecase on the right side , correct?

yep hapened to me and it was at the dunes also mine was the adjuster/pivot shaft for the shift fork broke off flush with the case and had the same loose shifter you are describing

yeah drain the coolent and oil, pull the lower hose of the side case pull the kick starter off, then remove the screws holding the side cover on, after removing the the screws pull the side cover off, watch the top area buy the water pump cover cause there is a tube with an o-ring that slides into the side case, becareful not to bend or mangle the tube removing the cover.after the cover is off look down under the clutch backet towards the back and you should see the shift shaft end if there is no pin coming throgh the shift shaft linkage then you found the problem. let me know if you need anything else always glad to help.

My son had a similar problem last trip to the dunes, locked in 3rd gear. Pulled off the side cover and found some metal filings. Knew then I had to split the cases, so we waited till we got back home. After pulling the engine and side case again I notices one of the shift fork shafts had come loose because a screw holding the shaft in had come loose causing the problem. I still don't know how the screw ended up inside the tranny area. Anyway close examination with the sidecover off may show you the problem, if not you will need to split the cases.

Good Luck

Ray
