I have an 05 w/ a Dyno Port 2-1 pipe, Filter Kit, Spacers and Carbon fiber reeds. I want to get a bigger set of carbs. I do some Harescrambles and trail riding. My main concern is getting some better performance w/o being a major gas hog. You guys think a set of 28mm's would do the trick?

go to a 33mm single carb, you'll add low end while still getting better top. if you go to some 28's, you'll risk a little bottom end and I don't think the top end will really add a lot. Not too mention, the 28's will use more gas than the stockers, and the single 33 will use less than the stockers. Heck, my 35 always used less.

I would say use the 28 Mikuni's, I run a 20 pilot and a 270 main and I fee they are very good on gas. Plus you can get the 28 plus the cable for about 225 New if you shop around.
