My buddy bought a shee a couple weeks ago that he came across on the side of the road. The owner claimed he just put a 404 kit in it. It ran great and he offered the guy a little money and he took it. That's all we know about it. He didn't even get the guys contact info. This week it started acting up. Keeps fowling the right side plug, so I told him it's probably a crank seal. But now it seems like the right side has lost compression. You can tell a difference if you hold your hands over the exhaust. It still runs strong, but he says it was much stronger when he bought it. Sounds to me like the rings may be gone in one jug. I have never seen a 404 kit, and don't really know what's involved in one, and he has no way of contacting the previous owner.

My question is, when we tear it down, how do we know if it's really a 404 kit? Are there any markings to tell, or do we need to measure it? What compression should it have? How low can it go before you recommend a rebuilt? Where is the best place to get the parts? I think that about covers it, thanks guys..........

check the reeds on the side your having problems,is the exhaust cold till you rev it it might be a bad reed, same problem ruined my buddys dune trip, got home pulled it all apart no problems puuting it all back together and found a bad reed in the same side problem was coming from, worth checkin first.

the pistons on my vitos 404 kit are stamoed with 67.92mm on the top about the only thing I can think of, also are the carbs clean and in sinc my bike acts up if the carbs get dirty or out of sinc some thing else to check before complete tare down

We will check it out next week when he gets back in town. The carbs seem to be fine. It's the damndest thing, A few weeks ago it ran great, then one day on a ride it died in one cylinder and started spitting oil out of the silencer (right side). I figured it was a bad crank seal cause the left plug still looked new. The right plug was fowled bad! We put in a new plug, ran like a champ. 2 weeks later, changed the oil and decided to change the plugs for the hell of it before a ride and I figured if the crank seal was leaking then the plug was probably about done for anyway. Both plugs still looked new after 2 weeks of riding! We threw in new ones anyway. The next day after about 3 hours of riding, right cylinder dies again. Pulled the plug and the same thing, covered with oil. And all day before the plug fowled it felt like the right side had less compression than the left.

If it were a crank seal problem, wouldn't it leak all the time instead of every now and then? And would this cause the drop in compression? Anyway, we will probably tear it down in the next week or 2 just to be sure, after we check the reeds and carbs. Any other suggestions????????????

We're gonna check the compression next week, what should we expect in each jug? How much of a difference is ok between the jugs.... if they do end up being different? Thanks
