Just curious, I want to get my crank welded but don't know where to get it done. Is this something that a machine shop could do and if so, where on the crank should they weld. Or am I gonna have to mail that heavy beeeaach somewhere?

Mail it. The crank needs to be trued (ideally before and) after welding. They need to be very fine spot welds and equidistant from each other so as not to screw up the balance of the crank. It's an easy job for the pros, but Joe Blow machinist WILL wreck your crank. I use Twister Performance for that type of stuff, Louie Swann is an old pro.

I have a chance to buy a HotRod race crank (standared stroke). I've been told that it doesn't need to be welded because of the quality of the parts. Does anyone have experience with this?

I was told that my Wiesco crank was no different than a stocker in that respect. With that sayed, I have worn out and blew up three top ends and have had the crank web bearings replaced once all on a non welded crank with race gas domes.
