does anybody know anything about anodizing? does the surface of the metal to be coated have to be smooth?is glass blasting enough? i mean,i wanna anodize my motor cases,is it poss? :huh:

anodizing will enlarge the given tolerances. for instance, the noss head, it starts smaller than the finished product, with a given amount for the expansion of the anodizing. if you took your motor and anodized it, the components wouldn't fit back together because everything will have expanded with the anodizing. how much to leave for the enlarging, i'm not sure.

 

does this make sense, it's hard for me to explain because i'm not much of a pro with this. someone else will come along and explain this better.

duno if it will mess stuf up but i know with the cases to make it look good you would wana polish them cases first

Material gets added somewhat to the surface from what I know. When we anodize parts we plug threaded holes with bolts because it will junk a thread in no time, and since the anodizing is harder that normal, it can not only dull a tap in a hurry, but if you go tapping out the holes with a now dull tap, the fucker WILL snap off in a hole.

I would mask any mating or gasket surfaces, and any threaded holes. There are ways to do it I think. They can mask for chrome, I think they can do it for anodize. It uses HCL and electricity, so its kind of a harsh enviornment in the tanks.

Like Stan said, it is a very hard and durable surface. The finish will look only as good as the pre-plated surface. When I have stuff anodized, it only adds .0003 to .0008 inch. I would mask, or have them mask bearing surfaces and threaded holes. Any material besides aluminum (or titanium) will be ruined. All the racks, clamps, etc. that they use are titanium. Different alloys anodize differently. I'm not sure how the cast will turn out.

I'm with money, sounds like a seriously raving bitch, but it would be the shit. I don't think it would really work, nor do I think the finish would be what you'd expect without a nice clean polish put on the cast metal. The thickness it adds is not as thick as I expected. Basically, you'd just be anodizing the exterior surfaces, that's a lot of masking, and one slip would be mucho problemos.

oops,sorry i deleted my post instead of modifying it! anodizing is realy only a micro coat,ya think it would make such a difference?

Anodizing isn't a coating. Anodizing operates on the principle of surface oxidization. THerefore it will enlarge a part, but only by .5 thousandths. Enlargind really is that big deal. For some reason I don't think and unfinished casting can be anodized. I'm pretty sure you would have to finely sand down the outside of youre cases and then align hone the inside bearing journals.
