I'm not exactly sure what is going on. First, my bike is very hard to start. Once you finally get it started sometimes it idles very high, sometimes it barely idles at all. It will hit on only 1 cyl. then it switches to the other. I was told that it may be the cdi unit. Does this sound like that.

see, i thought that might be it, but a few things that i have tried that I probably should have mentioned was, swapping plug wires, carbs, new reeds, etc. which didn't change a thing. I also have a float sticking on one of the carbs. If that would have anything to do with it. I have already went through both carbs. though.

Now this is interesting, I am experiencing the same problem. The banshee will only run on one cylinder at a time. and it has switched from the left side to the right side. I have disassembled and cleaned both carbs in an effort to correct the problem. I also disconnected one plug wire from the cylinder that was not running once I thought this was occuring to verify that the cylinder was not running. However when I do this I still have spark from the ploug wire as evidenced by it arcing to the head. I actually think this is a fuel problem as I can prime the motor to start it by putting a small amount of gas in each carb (kinda dangerous) and they both run until the fuel has been burned up, it then returns to the condition of running on one cylinder. My next step is to disassemble the fuel valve on the gas tank and check for obstructions although it appears that there is a good flow of gas from the fuel line to the carbs.

If anyone has any suggestions on this situation I would appreciate their expertise. Thanks!

my best advise for both your situations is,take the plugs out see if there soaked,clean them up with some carb cleaner,let them dry.put them back in,and try to start it with no choke.it sounds like you both have a rich condition.if any think it sounds like float problems,flooding the engine when idleing

I started with a new set of plugs and have done as you suggest a couple of times. This morning I adjusted the float level on the right side carb (the side that is not firing) thinking that the fuel level in the float bowl was too low for the pilot jet to pick it up and send it into the cylinder. I don't believe it is a rich condition, just the opposite, it seems like there is no fuel in the 'idle circuit' for this cylinder. When I prime the cylinder prior to starting, both cylinders will fire and run until the introduced fuel is spent, then that one cylinder quits running and it runs only on the left (this is evidenced by no exhaust pressure coming out the right side exhaust compared to the left side).

I appreciate the input and any advice anyone can offer as I continue to troubleshoot is welc

Yes, I disassembled both carbs and meticulously cleaned them and made sure all the jets and passages were squeaky clean, I also disassembled the gas tank this morning and cleaned the built in filters to ensure adequate fuel flow. I'm still not sure what is going on.

I got a tip from a friend of mine that it is the cdi unit. He was working on a bike with the same problems and after trying several stuff the cdi unit worked.So I went ahead and ordered one. Ill keep everyone posted when I find out.

Sounds like your slides are turned around backwards in your carbs. It's not hard to do after you've been up all night working out bugs. Check it out.

Ummmmmm, the CDI can most certainly fire on one cylinder or the other. Just because it fires both plugs at the same time, it can still "skip" a cylinder. Ih ave never seen it, but it can happen. I do however agree that it is fuel related. Is the choke tube in place?

Slow2_2, have you tested the stator? It may not be putting out enough juice (just a thought). You say it's hard to start, have you checked the compression? It idles high; could be an air leak or fuel starvation (clogged pilot, petcock, or stuck float-yes you need to get it adjusted right).

 

Boheme01, it almost sounds like it HAS to be fuel starvation, since it'll run OK when you add fuel...unless you have real low compression and the fuel is sealing the rings better. Have you checked the compression? Sounds like you've tried the simple stuff like fresh plugs and clean air filter, what about fresh premix fuel?
