cdcoxwell Posted March 16, 2004 Report Posted March 16, 2004 I am restoring an 87 banshee that my brother had own. To make a long story short, he was killed in a car accident and I have the bike now. Growing up I torchered people with this screaming machine. I am very familiar with the shee, though i am not with the mechanics. Shee has not been cranked in about 8 yrs. HELP!!!!! Attacking PROBLEM #1. There is no fire. What are the steps i need to take to start eliminating areas such as the c.d.i, kill switch, ignition and so forth. Any suggestions would be GREAT. By the way which repair manual is the better, Clymer etc. Quote
Lightninn2 Posted March 16, 2004 Report Posted March 16, 2004 The first thing to do is change the plugs and see if you get fire. If not, then the fact that it has sat so long would lead me to look for corrosion where the harness grounds to the frame. One place to inspect is near the CDI box behind the seat. Remove the bolt that attaches the black wire to the frame and sand that area clean and sand the wire connector, too. Replace and try again. Next remove the coil and sand where it attaches to the frame and the surfaces on the coil mount. Also unplug the two small wires from the coil and clean their connectors and the connectors on the coil. If that doesn't work, post again and I or someone can explain how to dig further.... Good luck! Quote
frocashmoney24 Posted March 16, 2004 Report Posted March 16, 2004 yea a clymer manual will help, lighin got most of it, if you need anything else keep askin Quote
ledofthezep Posted March 16, 2004 Report Posted March 16, 2004 Good input Lightninn2...you're an HQ natural. Atop of that, if you have an OHM meter, you may check the stator after checking what was already mentioned. Again, get yourself a clymer's manual. It will more than pay itself off in the long run, plus it will give you all the specs & troubleshooting assitance. And welcome to the HQ. Quote
Lightninn2 Posted March 17, 2004 Report Posted March 17, 2004 Thanks Led... just trying to help. Quote
Hockey390 Posted March 17, 2004 Report Posted March 17, 2004 I have an 87 and one thing I find makes a huge difference is your carbs. I suggest removing the carbs and going through them completely and cleaning them out. Use a high pressured stream of air to get alot of dirt and grime out, and make sure you whipe it all down good. When you say no fire I take it to mean its just not running, but my pops always told me one thing. To run you need to consider 2 things; Spark and Gas. So with that information in mind, if you have one... Your missing the other. If you narrow it down to one of those, we will lead you to the problem as well as helping you fix it. Good luck.. PS. Be careful, its addicting. Quote
Hockey390 Posted March 18, 2004 Report Posted March 18, 2004 I am unsure of EVERY component that is needed in order to give you spark, but I do know a few important ones. I would start from the cap and work your way back. Someone reading this might know of a component that is missing, so keep an eye out for that. Start off cleaning out the plug cap with a brush, and making sure to get any debry or rust out. Then work your way up the wire. If you have a manual that helps alot, but if not, here is a link to the important stuff you will probably need. http://216.37.204.205/Yamaha_OEM/YamahaATV...ype=13&A=2&B=38 Another thing I would suggest is that you sort of check over any electrical units you can. Unplug things, make sure its not rusted, then plug it back in. Same with any grounding wires.. Make sure they are clean grounds. Be sure that everything IS plugged in.. The banshee's electrical unit is very tricky and if one thing is unplugged that you would NEVER think would make a difference in starting (or stoping ) could be the whole problem. ***Post on here instead of PM's, you will get more help*** Plus my mailbox got filled up.. =) Quote
