gumby Posted February 29, 2004 Report Posted February 29, 2004 ok so while the shee is down i decided to replace the swingarm bearing becuase i new they where shot. so i got a pivot works kit that comes with all the goodies. then i asked a local banshee builder on anything i should watch for he told me to be careful becuase the bolt some times seizes and wont come out. ok fine so i went to work on it tapped the bolt once with a hammer and out it came. so i tried to put the new bearing in the swingarm but they wont fit. on further inspection i find the outer race of the bearing is smashed to shit against the wall of the swingarm. so now what do i do to it? can it be saved or is it time for a new swingarm or what? azsandrat Posted February 29, 2004 Report Posted February 29, 2004 Well there is no reason to get a new swing arm. You can take a die grinder and make a groove in the race. This will let it collapse and fall out. If you don't have a die grinder try driving a pointed punch or screw driver between the swing arm and race and pry towards the inside. This will also collapes it. Good luck Quote
BaddBanshee Posted February 29, 2004 Report Posted February 29, 2004 I just had the same thing. Use a cape chisel and you can carefully fold the race inboard to collapse it. (A cape chisel has a rounded back side and the cutting edge on opposite side. It will not damage the bore so the new bearing will fit ). Quote
geaux 4 it Posted February 29, 2004 Report Posted February 29, 2004 When you install the new bearings.Freeze them for about an hour .It will make them a lot easier to install plus you won't bang them up as bad either. Quote
MotulMonsta Posted February 29, 2004 Report Posted February 29, 2004 You can't knock it out with a long drift from the otherside?? that's what I do. It takes a while but it has never failed me. There is also a bearing removal tool that resembles an exhaust pipe expander but smaller and it works by the same priciples, you stick it in the bearing, expand it so it grips it good, then use the slide hammer to knock it out. Works great. Quote
dnhyoung Posted February 29, 2004 Report Posted February 29, 2004 while you are there, drill and tap a zerk fitting in the swingarm, just make sure that it is somewhere you can get at it once everything is back together Quote
