Play in steering stem

I have some play in the steering stem [about 1/8 in.] You can move the handle bars forward & back. I bought a used steering stem clamp and am thinking if this is worn some it may be causing the extra play. Does the seal take away any of this play or is that just to keep dirt and water out?? Thanks.

The seals aren't very big at all, barely bigger than the notch they fit in. I'd say the clamp is worn.

JD I didn't know the steering stem clamps get greased. Time for billet stem clamps with a grease fitting!

Just that split o ring area.

 

I forget that company who makes /used to make the Delrin clamps. Savage 420 runs one. Has a grease zirt.

 

Ima have to design one.

You can also sand down where the 2 pieces meet and it will tighten up on the stem.

It's way bigger then stock grease zerk good seals no more play or squeak

I had the same exact thing... turns out it was the tie rod that was bolted in to the a arm
