juldan1 Posted November 19, 2003 Report Posted November 19, 2003 whats the story on pacing in the toomey pipes. are they absolutely necessary. I had one in there and pulled it out, will it hurt Quote
Wassup350 Posted November 20, 2003 Report Posted November 20, 2003 If your talking about the fiberglass silencer packing then yes it is necesary. If you take it out then it will lose the backpressure and your engine won't run right. Im not positive how the backpressure deal works but i know that you need it. Quote
wesw Posted November 22, 2003 Report Posted November 22, 2003 being a 2 stroke the backpressure keep the gas and air mixtures in the motor by using "sonic waves" or something. yes you have to have packing Quote
cb67rs1 Posted November 22, 2003 Report Posted November 22, 2003 i dont think you need the packing, its just for sound, yes you would have less pressure on the pipes, but most pipes are designed that the shape of the expansion champer creates the back pressure to help with the performance. drag pipes dont have the packing. anyways the silencers wouldnt play into effect of the back pressure all that much. when the exhaust comes out into the expansion chamber and reaches where the chamber starts to get smaller (right before the stinger) thats where the sound waves are reflected forcing the unused fuel air mixture that has tried to escape the exhaust port back into the motor. try it with out and see Quote
Wassup350 Posted November 24, 2003 Report Posted November 24, 2003 Well if your pipes came with silencers that have packing in them its a sure deal that you need the packing in it. It wont have enough backpressure with out it unless the pipes are designed to run with out silencers. Quote
BlewBullet Posted November 25, 2003 Report Posted November 25, 2003 I've taken the packing out of my inframe CPI's for a day.....it was really loud, lost alot of power up top but throttle response was alot better down low....i've done it alot to my bike never blew it up or anything...but beware it's loud,REAL loud but sounds good HEHEHE Quote
rebelbanshee2 Posted November 26, 2003 Report Posted November 26, 2003 when my bro got is 310r it didnt have any packing in the muffler. put some in and whammo! very noticable increace in power, and in wasnt obnoxiously loud any more. Quote
Hiram Posted November 26, 2003 Report Posted November 26, 2003 It also helps direct the flow straight out. Quote
Screamin_Banshee Posted November 28, 2003 Report Posted November 28, 2003 Heres my $.02... First I wouldnt take tha packin out for trail/mx/play riding...ITS WAY TO LOUD. I took the packin out of my T5 silencers, and ran a straight pipe thru the silencer itself..made NO diff in the power it made, or times on the track. Only plus I saw to it was it made it louder so I could hear my bike over the drag pipes. Like CB67rs1 said, what about drag pipes? they have no silencers, which as most of you are sayin creates the back pressure. On drag pipes silencers do 2 things...one make is quieter and help hold the heat in....The back pressure that is needed is made in the expansion chamber of the pipe. Quote
Yamaha350T Posted December 2, 2003 Report Posted December 2, 2003 pulling the packing out ruins the sweet sound of a screaming banshee. You don't want it all echoing and incredibly loud or anything. Personally, I like how the Toomeys sound with packing. But I don't know, its up to you. Quote
