blast off Posted April 20, 2012 Report Posted April 20, 2012 Ok so there seems to be a lot of opinions on performing the leakdown test, Ive heard some say side covers on some say off (which in order to make sure the case is sealed it would need to be off) some say 6psi for 6 min is good. So I guess what im asking is, can someone tell me the proper way to perform the test to cut out any confusion. Or paste a link to the proper instructions. I recently purchased a tester from POOLMAN and the tester he sent is top notch and he is a great guy to dea with. I just want to use it correct and to its full potential. Thanks for any help! Quote
gotta_goatsfast Posted April 20, 2012 Report Posted April 20, 2012 I test engine sealed up without stator and clutch cover. This allows me to listen for air escaping into the trans or through the crank seals, ect... General rule of thumb is it should hold 6psi of air for 6 minutes. To prove a point to some buddies about proper sealing, my motor held 6psi for 4 hours lol. There's no science behind it. Seal the motor up, pressurize it, and watch the gauge for any leakage. Pretty darn simple. Quote
Larry's Shee Posted April 20, 2012 Report Posted April 20, 2012 I depends whether you are trying to find a leak or testing on new assembly. If new test before eithet side is assembled , if you have a case leak no sense having to pull clutch back off. If you think engine sprung a leak, start by spraying easy acess areas with soapy water, putting vent hose in glass of wter may tell of case or clutch side seal leak. If you have a base gasket leak, don't need to tear everything apart. Be sure to check spark plugs for leak also. Quote
erickson483 Posted April 20, 2012 Report Posted April 20, 2012 When you pressurize to 6 psi you are only pressurizing the crank, jugs, and head. Your clutch and stator covers are not being pressurized. So if air leaks into one of the covers during the test you WILL see that on the gauge. The point is, covers on or off won't really make a difference. Quote
Dicklez Posted April 20, 2012 Report Posted April 20, 2012 whats a leakdown test? Fuck it. If you think its leaking, spray some carb cleaner around your seals. If it revs, its leaking. Quote

I know its easy and I work on BMW's so these things are pancakes but I just wanted to be 100% sure im not missing anything like TDC or something. Thanks again Quote
