Chip M Posted February 11, 2012 Report Posted February 11, 2012 It was stuck in 2nd gear when I bought it. (96 Banshee). The shift shaft ratchet was not located correctly on the cam. The shift shaft and return spring post were in bad shape so I have new ones coming. My question is, with the gearshift shaft , ratchet and stopper/spring taken off, should I be able to turn the star by hand to navigate through all the gears? I did get through the gears when I relocated ratchet before disassembling, but it was not a easy task. Lots of sprocket turning and wiggling was needed. Any info would be appreciated. Quote
Larry's Shee Posted February 11, 2012 Report Posted February 11, 2012 I wouldn't think that if you grabbed it by the star it would be very easy as you have no mechanical advantage as you do with a shift "lever". Quote

You usually have to roll the transmission (sprocket) to get the gears to mesh. As long as it goes in all the gears it should be fine. Was there an unusual amount of metal in the oil when you drained it? Quote
Jereme6655 Posted February 15, 2012 Report Posted February 15, 2012 /\ /\ /\ x2 you really gotta roll the travnission over to get them to want to even try to mesh. and still...even then you will notice a whole lot of 1/2 shifts...where it starts to roll over and just stops and stick between gears.. Don't worry about this....the trans was meant to be shifted at over 1000 rpm......your trying to shift it at like 8 rpm Quote
