I have a 92 banshee that I recently purchased. Haven't had alot of experience with two strokes. It starts and idles good but smokes a bit of white smoke out the right side tailpipe at idle. In any fear while driving as soon as I try giving it wot it just feels like it's holding back and won't get in the powerband at all and blows a shitload of white smoke. Now I'm guessing that I have a bad headgasket and I got coolant in that cylinder head. But will that cause the complete loss of power like that ? Just wanna get some opions before I pop the headgasket out? Thanks guys

I have had a customer once that came in with an identical problem to yours and after dissasembly, the resulting problem was infact the head gasket, which in-turn allowed coolant to leak into that cylinder. I would check asap before it becomes a more severe problem. The one I did, actually rode it that way long enough to have the piston break off in a few spots due to the coolant in the chamber weakening the alloy, causing cracks, and eventualy breaks and chips. Hope this helps.

ok so i just got done changing the headgasket and it seems to be alittle better. i didnt get the oppurtunity to actually drive it as i live in the city area so it was just at idle. when i got the gasket off it seemed ok but im pretty sure there was coolant sitting on top of the piston. now it may have spilled in when i took the head cover off but im not too sure. anyways the guy i brought it from told me that not too long ago he cnanged the crank seals which makes me think that it may not have been done correctly. if it would be the crank seals could that be causing the loss of power as well. and how would it cause that since the crank seals are in the crankcase. thanks for all the replies guys. good stuff , i gotta figure this out, its killing me. haha

If it still doesn't run right I would suggest a leak-down test. The crank seals prevent air from being drawn in on stator side and oil on clutch side. They also ensure the air/fuel mix will be pushed into cylinder on down stroke of piston. Ther is no volume of oil in crankcase. BTW, Welcome to BHQ !! Also check your plugs, also could be some residual coolant in crankcase that might take time to burn off.

Along the lines of what Larry said; To answer your question about the crank seals - the reason transmission fluid can and sometimes does get into your actual cylinder chamber (above the piston) is due to the fact that on the downstroke of the pistion, it pushes whatever mixture is in the crankcase, below the pistion, (usually fuel and air in a normal condition) through the passages (aka transfer ports) into the chamber above the pistion, which is then squished and given spark upon the up stroke, so on and so forth. So if there is a flaw in the seal, that downward and upward motion of the pistion draws a vacuum that is strong enough to pull some of that fluid in. And again, as larry said, ride the quad for a few minutes to see if it gets better, giving it a few quick wraps of the throttle to clean out any possible contaminants lurking down in the crankcase. Hope this helps.

wow, all i gotta say is this could quite possibly be the best forums site i have ever belonged to. Thanks for all the replies, haha. Anyways, changed the headgasket last night and finally got it out to take a couple rips. There definitely seems to be much less white smoke, but still smoke nonetheless. Now it is quite a bit quicker from takeoff but still when the powerband shold be rolling in it just feels like nothing, wants to pull but cant. Still a good bit of smoke at this point. I did however notice another possible option. I had it running at idle and was moving around the spark plug wire and the idle starting changing and then it seemed like it was stuck at wot. Turning the key off didnt even shut it down. Had to put it in gear and stall it. Also the box where the plug wires run to has some type of puddy around the wires. I assume a coil pack or whatever it is that a two stroke uses. Now im thinking about taking off the clutch cover to check the crank seal but i could use some assistance in what exactly im looking for. Is it just one or two seals? And what type of seal? I've been working on and building cars for quite some time so doing the actual work is no problem just have never done a two sroke. Again, thanks for all the help this far!!!

Not being a smart a$$ , but looking at it will tell you nothing unless it's an obvious tear (unlikely). Leakdown test pressureizes crankcase , if it holds 6lbs for 6 minutes your good. Replacement of seal requires splitting cases. One seal on each end of crank, pretty much run of the mill oil seal. Crank seals go for about $20 pair, complete kits go for $30+ have kicker, shift ,sprocket shaft. BHQ thanks you for the compliment. :D

Yea i was planning on purchasing a manual. Just been so frustrated with this thing i've been thinking about just selling it. i dont have near as much time as i used to since we now have two children. So any ideas along the lines of the spark plug wire. I was going to try a compression test but i guess that wont tell me what i would need to know huh?

1. If its white smoke its condensation plain and simple.

2. If its truly a crank seal there is no way thats going to blow white smoke unless water is in it.

3. Its either a bad head gasket or something cylinder related. Water/anti-freeze is getting in the combustion chamber, probably past the rings and into the crankcase...

Start with the heads, they are easy enough to remove. When draining the coolant chk for oil mixed in.

Good Luck
