waylandplayer Posted November 28, 2009 Report Posted November 28, 2009 Hi everyone I had to cut my banshee in order to put a gsxr motor in. I cut out the top two sections out. pretty much where the gas tank starts to straight up above the pegs. just wondering if the bike will be strong enough to ride without breaking the thing in half. if i should fix this thing should i just get another frame and weld it back together? Screaming Yellow Zonker Posted November 28, 2009 Report Posted November 28, 2009 I would definitely put some bars back in there. You would probably start bending the frame from the lack of strength and end up with a banana frame. Quote
bansheesandrider Posted November 28, 2009 Report Posted November 28, 2009 You need to put in replacement bars that are modified to clear the GSXR motor AND then you need to add reinforcements to the frame anywhere there could be a problem with flexing or breaking. That motor weighs twice what the Banshee motor weighs and puts out more power so the frame is under way more stress than it used to be. That is the problem with a street bike motor swap. Quote
waylandplayer Posted November 28, 2009 Author Report Posted November 28, 2009 thanks for the advice, should i just buy another frame and cut sections out of the replacement and then add more reinforcements. wats the best thing to do, try to get straight tubing and weld them in place or wat kind of tubing. this thing is going to be used for field riding and for the snow and ice. right now the everything thing else is at stock dimensions. i was thinking about extending the swing arm either 2-4 inches. the biggest thing i want to do is widen the front and get something with longer travel. AKheathen Posted November 28, 2009 Report Posted November 28, 2009 you can use the frame off a bmx or something for good material, or buy tubing.....you will taco that thing otherwise Quote
waylandplayer Posted November 29, 2009 Author Report Posted November 29, 2009 this project just gotmore complex, thanks for the help Quote
waylandplayer Posted November 30, 2009 Author Report Posted November 30, 2009 i can into another problem, i have to seat about a foot and a half back cause the tank is so big, its alot of work Quote
jbooker82 Posted November 30, 2009 Report Posted November 30, 2009 I would throw the whole thing in the garbage and start over with a 660 raptor roller. They have a lot taller engine so you will have way more room. Quote
sleeper06 Posted November 30, 2009 Report Posted November 30, 2009 If you are not an excellent fabricator and welder it wouldnt be safe to stick that much power/torque in a stock cut-up chassis Quote
shoopie Posted November 30, 2009 Report Posted November 30, 2009 (edited) im going to do the same project in the near future. ive really been doing some homework so i can do it right. i found a few links with good pictures that will help me and you. the first one is pretty much perfectly done. the last one is pretty cool. great fab work. If you could post some pictures of your build it would be greatly appreciated http://www.1000rr.net/forums/showthread.php?p=1537927 http://www.johnhasmorefun.com/street_banshee/pics/r1_banshee_build/ http://www.rhinoforums.net/lonestar-racing/30467-haybusa-powered-banshee-complete-custom-lone-star-build-w-pics.html Edited November 30, 2009 by shoopie Quote
waylandplayer Posted November 30, 2009 Author Report Posted November 30, 2009 Well i have two banshee frames. i think i may redo my work because i just ran into a huge problem with exhaust. Also i have no worries about the welding. i am not doing any of the welding. I have three welders. one owns the blacksmith shop. the other one is a expert welder with 20 years of experience, he builds and racing motorcycles and my last one works on race cars, he does most of the welding and mechanical work on two different teams in my area. its just hard fitting this big motor in the frame. I need to figure out either to keep it cheap and just run with the gsxr tank and air box or do some custom work. Quote
waylandplayer Posted November 30, 2009 Author Report Posted November 30, 2009 what is the best kind of tubing should i use? stainless steel is very pricey Quote
AKheathen Posted November 30, 2009 Report Posted November 30, 2009 dude, raw fabrication is where it's at. if you don't have the passion or aptitude for it, that's ok since you have those who do. beats, trying to scabb pre-fabbed shit to fit an un-intended aplication. i would not try to blend stainless and mild steel. the banshee frame is japneese mild and will blend well with chromolly, though you can use cheap mild if structurally built right.ith chromolly, though you can use cheap mild if structurally built right. while you are at it, you may want to look in the suspension section and there is a long travle you can fab up for the front that would do you some good. waylandplayer Posted November 30, 2009 Author Report Posted November 30, 2009 thanks, i was trying to find what the frame was made of, so far i was using mild steel. i tried stainless at first but it didnt seem strong. especially cause i dont have a tig welder. i may use some tubing but i am thinking going to an angle pieces of steal. the motor is just so big. i maybe putting a 8 inch extended swing arm cause i will be sitting back so far now. Quote
waylandplayer Posted December 2, 2009 Author Report Posted December 2, 2009 I was told that even a 2 inch extended swing arm well cause a huge difference in handling. if i put an 8 inch extended swing arm would i be able to turn at all? Quote
