I bought an 87 banshee that has been severely abused. Once I sorted through the rats nest of wiring and got spark, it starts within 1-2 kicks. When I took it for a spin, first gear worked great, second wouldn't engage, it was like third was not there at all, but fourth engaged fine, I didn't go any farther than that. Is the problem in the external, such as the shift star or the shift shaft or is it internal in the forks and gears? I do not really want to tear it completely down if I do not have too.

Just pull the clutch cover and take a look at it. Like bansheefreak said a clymers manual will be helpful if its your first rodeo and you dont know what your doing. If the clymers doesent help you snap some pics and post them up maybe someone will help. Are you sure that it wasnt shifting? maybe the clutch is slipping so bad that it has no power because it wont engage check your clutch cable and the arm, the two arrows should idealy line up or be as close as possible. I believe all this is told step by step in the clymers manual.

I pulled the side cover to find metal shavings and chipped gears. I have another good tranny, does anyone have any suggestions on a good clutch basket with the drive gear?

To replace a stock basket is expensive,go with a billet basket,as for the gear on the basket I would be happy to send you one,I have 4 of them all my bikes use diffrent gears for drag, also your tranny gears are not in your side cover
