official_style Posted February 20, 2009 Report Posted February 20, 2009 my stock o-ring chain is a little too tight on my 97, i need to add link a link or a half link, is this possible to do? Quote
fasstbanshee Posted February 20, 2009 Report Posted February 20, 2009 yes it is possible you can get links at a local bike shop you'll need to know the size of the chain so that you get the correct link. I can't remember what the banshee is i haven't added any to it, but i've done it when i rode 3 wheelers......a good bike shop should be able to figure it out for you. Quote
docjcwatson Posted February 20, 2009 Report Posted February 20, 2009 Sure. You could box the chain up and send it back to the company and have them put in a link for you. But it's just cheaper to get a new one. Besides that, think about your sprockets "fingerprint". The other links would be worn down to where the chain would roll smoothly over both sprockets. So now if you replace just one. You have a new link that would not roll over the sprockets the same way as the other links. Some people have told me that it is ok to run two master links in one chain. I simply don't like that idea, it makes for two weak points in the chain. Quote
official_style Posted February 20, 2009 Author Report Posted February 20, 2009 from searching around on google, im thinking this might be a bad idea, and just buy a new chain, they dont seem too expensive, which chain should i go with? Quote
SAVAGE420 Posted February 20, 2009 Report Posted February 20, 2009 Sidewinder gold x-ring. What ever you do don't buy something cheep like an e-bay special. My sidewinder chain and sprockets have never let me down and are one of or if not the best IMO. Or if you want something middle of the road, get a primary x-ring at RMATV. Quote
fasstbanshee Posted February 20, 2009 Report Posted February 20, 2009 (edited) Depends if you want to get back out on the trails asap with a quick fix. or if you have time/money to do it right. I rather have 2 master links on my chain then sit at home watching tv  Edited February 20, 2009 by fasstbanshee Quote
official_style Posted February 20, 2009 Author Report Posted February 20, 2009 i got plenty of time before i start riding, its still too cold here. i want to do it right, and have the least amount of shit to break and go wrong once it is riding season. im thinking of the Primary Drive 520 ORH chain, sounds good to me, and the price isnt bad. anyone have any experience? I've been running D.I.D. for a long long time on many different bikes Quote
tony cub Posted February 20, 2009 Report Posted February 20, 2009 regina gold...it will take all the shit you can throw at it... Quote
official_style Posted February 20, 2009 Author Report Posted February 20, 2009 (edited) soooo then the DID 520 ATV X-RING Chain would be the way to go? some reviews say that the master link sucks. Edited February 20, 2009 by official_style Quote
fasstbanshee Posted February 20, 2009 Report Posted February 20, 2009 Thats the one to get.....no real problems with master just don't twist the link putting it on so that it goes on flush Quote
official_style Posted February 20, 2009 Author Report Posted February 20, 2009 im between the DID and the primary, i need to count the teeth on my front and back sprockets tomorrow, so i know which to order. Quote
Woolfman Posted February 21, 2009 Report Posted February 21, 2009 How did it all of a sudden get tight? Chains don't usually shrink. You sure your chain adjustment isn't just off? See if you can bring your carrier forward. Or you could always lose a tooth on one of your sprockets if you were thinking of changing your gearing. Hate to throw away a perfectly good chain. Quote
official_style Posted February 21, 2009 Author Report Posted February 21, 2009 it didnt all of a sudden get tight, it has been like this for a while. here is the story. when i was a wee little lad i got my 97 and it had a very loose chain among other things. so being afraid to work on it, i brought it to yamaha of new rochelle. i was like fix all the shit, and the chain is a new one, its just loose. so they "fix" everything, and charge me a shitload. the guy says the chain is bad, im like it was ridden on 3 times and he is like its a banshee they go thru chains like that. so im like ok whatever pay for it and thats that. so now as i get used to working on the quad, i keep noticing when i fix shit they didnt do it correctly. then i get the 06 and i try and adjust the chain on the 97 to get it looser, and the tension adjusters are all the way backed out. so last night i go to take this too small chain off, and i find what i thought was the master link, and get this. they must have lost the master link, because under the clip the pins were just kind of hammered in there, and i had to grind them down to get it off. so the basic moral here is fuck yamaha of new rochelle, and fix ur shit urself. dragbanshee Posted February 21, 2009 Report Posted February 21, 2009 I have used a lot of chains and never had any problems, but then again they were all the big name brands. Now I run the Primary Drive brand and their very good chains. I think the one I have now is the rdo oring with the side window cutouts for self cleaning. I never really thought much about how the chains looked, but this chain looks pretty cool with the cutouts in it, and I can see where it would help clean. I have been using these chains for a while now with no problems. With my old setup I ran 2 M-links cause I screwed up and took 1 too many off when I got it, "ROOKIE" I know! Anyway it held up good but its always got you wondering. Quote
