cessnarob Posted January 2, 2009 Report Posted January 2, 2009 Names Robert and I'm new to this forum..I have been building dirt bikes for 20yrs now..I come here for help as I am stumped. I read alot of info from here all the time and I did a search but couldn't find my answer as I feel I have exhausted my knowledge on this...what I have is a 99 shee I just rebuilt engine in along with carbs.. The bike yesterday ran good but had a little unburnt fuel dripping from left side silencer..well first thought was float not right since had wet drain tube...I readjusted carb float..same thing...shee smoked alot from rleft side also..well today I tried leaning my needles..lost all bottom end and power..but quit the horrible smoking..I put the needle clip back to the center notch..well now it still bearly smokes, radiator is gargling when I shut it off..I sprayed starting fluid around eveyrthing and found no leaks, I have tried everything from 3/4 turns too 2 turns on air/fuel mix adjustment and yes carbs are in sync..well this after noon I found my right plug boot loose and fixed it ..but still runs like mud...Compression is 132lbs both sides and passed leak down test 6lbs for 10 minutes..Darn thing seems to be running lean to me but nothing is clogged up...I should of left well enough alone since it ran good yesterday..oh yeah as of today she started doing some back firing from both sides..??? any thoughts or questions are greatly appreciated..Robert Quote
98_shee Posted January 2, 2009 Report Posted January 2, 2009 (edited) Backfiring normaly means an air leak check your intake boots out make sure they don't have any cracks, what is your curent jetting, elavation, mods? Did you put the balance tube back in between the carbs? And did you put the carb bowls back on the rite carb? And welcome!!!!!  Edited January 2, 2009 by 98_shee Quote

regalrocket Posted January 2, 2009 Report Posted January 2, 2009 Is the tube connecting the two carbs together connected? I have put the carbs on, forgot that, and one cylinder will just fog unburnt fuel while the other runs OK. Quote

regalrocket Posted January 2, 2009 Report Posted January 2, 2009 (edited) 98_Shee, sorry I didn't see that you mentioned the choke tube, I got all excited and replied before reading everyones posts. That choke tube just got me last night when I put my quad back together. I have done it a bunch of times, but forgot it, and i would get one side to run, then the other would fall offline. I chased my tail for a few minutes then realized what I had done. Talk about feeling dumb when I found out what it was. On a side note, I assume your a Pilot. I am a Cessna owner, A&P/IA and MEI. We need a little info on set up. It could just be a jetting issue. What pipes and air filter/filters are you running. Any other mods to the motor? What fuel are you running, is it fresh? What is timing set at? With the bike idling are you getting bubbles up at the radiator cap? Quote

cessnarob Posted January 2, 2009 Author Report Posted January 2, 2009 engine, carbs, exhaust, airbox are all stock..no TORS and No PARKING BRAKE SWITCH  I don't know what the jet numbers are. I would say they could be wrong but the bike ran good originally after carbs where overhauled. I'm going to tear the carbs down again and reset the float levels and check for dirt in gas.. Quote

Just a Private pilot... I don't go flying enough to buy one.. I did go get my G1000 sign off this summer though and start my instrument training in the new G1000 Real nice I might add.. Quote

LOL Should have 25 pilots, and I believe 200 or 210 mains. since its all stock and all you did was freshen it up, I would clean the carbs well, make sure the floats are set at 21mm from top of float to gasket surface (with carb upside down). Also make sure that you have good flow from the petcock out of the tank. there are 2 filters in the tank on the valve that can get clogged with shit. Also make sure the cap is venting properly. Quote

firebanshee Posted January 2, 2009 Report Posted January 2, 2009 Did you get the slides to the carbs mixed up ? Quote
cessnarob Posted January 2, 2009 Author Report Posted January 2, 2009 Did you get the slides to the carbs mixed up ? Nope, checked that twice....I just took it around the block after pitting the carbs back on from cleaning them and looking them over...runs better..still no smoke at all and no bottom end take off power..I sprayed starting fluid around joints and nothing happenned..I'm playing with air mix screws now with no luck at all..it stopped the backfiring this morning though..that's a plus!! Although itnwill sound like it throws a heavy shot of air from time to time......... Quote
