Hey thanks to all for the help. Much swearing later, the adjuster rod and ball are removed. As you can see, the ball was very much welded to the adjuster, AND to the push rod. Now for the next step: How do I get the push rod out of there? I inserted a small magnet, but it's not strong enough to pull the push rod. I'm thinking of making an electromagnet out of a bolt.

(See post 2 for the second picture and remainder of question...sorry, but I couldn't see any other way to get two pictures posted)

The second picture is a close-up of the shaft. The pushrod is in the center, obviously. It's hard to tell from the picture, but it's about 2 inches back. I'm concerned about the rough edge, which is pointed out in yellow. Is that part of the shaft, or the rod? How am I supposed to get that POS out of there? :whoa:

Thanks as always...

Also, any suggestions on where to find a used Banshee transmission? I'm thinking it might not be a bad idea to have one in case this situation takes a bad turn for the worse, or for future use.

Another thought...could I drill a hole in the rod and use an extractor to pull it out? Or will that rod just spin freely?

Looking at the transmissionsons on ebay...I was expecting to see them in-case, but instead, they're in pieces. Is that the standard way of selling them, or not?

Sorry, that's probably a stupid question, but I'm still pretty new to this 4-wheeler thing.

Thanks

some people sell togeher, some seperate, you can get good deals on just cases so alot of people seperate, if you can reach in there and hold the rod as u drill, i dont see how it wouldent work

Did you remove the 'PUSH LEVER ASSY' on top of the case?...wonder if it's gotten bound up on there somehow. Would be my best guess, I would think that if you got a drill in there you'll just spid that pushrod.

Frocashmoney, thanks for the reply.

Another stupid question (do I sound paranoid or what?), but "reach in" where? That rod runs through the shaft, where can I get ahold of it?

yea take out the push rod assembly, should come right out, is there anyway, you can stick a pair of needle nose pliers int he end, and snatch onto a rougn edge?

Well, this chapter of the story has reached its unfortunate conclusion. I was unable to drill into the rod...hardened steel. The push lever would not come out, although a little force with a pry bar finally freed it. It was scored pretty badly, it looks like it was welded to the rod as well. It doesn't appear that there is any way to get that 1#$!!@#$ rod out without cracking the case...and that's beyond my ability, so off to the shop it goes.

THANKS to all of you...especially FROCASHMONEY and LEDOFTHEZEP for the advice, lessons, and moral support. I'm sure there are others, but it's late and I'm brain dead.

One more questions: Has anybody compiled a list of things to look for when buying a used ATV?

You could use a drill and drill a small hole in the end of the rod and tap it out. screw in a long bolt and pull. Most likely it's mushroomed on the the other end as well so you're better off splitting the case. Replace the clutch throw out arm if it shows any signs of wear.

Don't go that route....shit happens. Plain & simple. We're always here to help ya out too. ;) Get you a clymers manual & tear into it, it's not as hard as it looks; granted breaking into a motor with no previous experience is a bit intimidating...but once you get in there you'll see there's not a whole lot to it. You will also be able to save yourself some money & appreciate the fact that you, yourself fixed the problem. With a stealer working on it, you never know what exactly was done, and if it was done correctly. Just my .02....don't get rid of your banshee over this. B)

Don't give in that quickly, Splitting the cases is not as hard as you might think. You will actually have a better understanding of makes does what when it's done. Get a Clymers and a nice clear bench and hit it. It's really alot easier than you think, and it's been done thousands of times collectively by this site, so any questions are just a post away.
