Shift mods

my bike hates shifting under spirited riding so i started reading around BHQ for fixes and wanted to ask the group your thoughts. Bike is an 06 with all the usual bolt on mods about to get the magic touch from Sleeper06 along with some new pistons, so im looking at more power with the stock tranny.

Options i am considering:

1) mod the shift star myself which seems easy enough. Will do this regardless of the other options i pursue below

2) window out the shift shaft as seen in the pic i stole from one of Savege420's posts. I understand this is worthwhile and seems like an easy thing to ad to my list.

3) 'easy' shift spring sold by a few places including FAST. i've seen posts on here suggesting to keep the stock spring over this one though. Bad idea to run one of these softer springs?

4) one of those roller bearing arms found in the Mull Engineering and Shift-Pro kits that sits against the shift star. seems pricey ($46 from mull engineering or $70 for the shift pro) for this small piece, not sure if its worth the extra cash.

Keep in mind i already have the pancake bearing mod and the bike isnt a real high hours abused machine. What items above do i really need to do/buy given my bikes probably only going to be a 60-70hp machine at the max

thanks for the input. Ive watched a video on it and done some reading, seems the general theory is just taking about 1mm off each point except the 6th-1st gear point. Is it really that hard to take some material off on a bench grinder and smooth it out with some fine grit sand paper? Ill leave the soft spring off the list! I will see about grabbing one of the detent roller arms then too. I dont want to start messing with the tranny beyond this, having gears cut etc is a little more than i want to do at this stage. Thanks for the advice!

We told you when you split your cases to have your crank welded to get your transmission ProMod'd for $200.

None of the above mentioned bolt-on mods will do shit for shifting like the ProMod will.

I have all the bolt-on mods mentioned above except the ProMod and my transmission shifts just as shitty as yours...

Make sure your eccentric screw is adjusted properly. Idgaf what anyone says, a promod is not always the answer for shifting. A lot of the times the shift shaft is worn or eccentric screw is out of adjustment. I had 90+ hp mtrs with 100% stock trans parts shift FLAWLESS under heavy loads.

Another HUGE problem and probably the most common is simply shifter position. Most people tend to have shifter down too far and while shifting the foot is not completely coming off shifter therefore shift shaft wont engage the star for the next shift.

And to add to Special's statement, I forgot to mention that the torsion spring that slides onto the shift shaft gets dented from use and should be replaced with a new eccentric screw and jamb nut lock washer as regular maintenance.

The bushing the shift shaft twists in under the shift shaft seal can get worn out over time, especially if one is having shifting problems and stands on the gear slammer.

im pulling the motor this weekend to send the top end off to Sleeper, guess i will split the cases and do a pro-mod tranny. already reached out to RedLine to see what their turn around time is like and what specifically needs to be sent to them so i dont leave anything out.

I keep my shifter angled up a little more than normal riders since i dont ride without boots. I will make sure the eccentric screw in properly adjusted when i reassemble everything. thanks for the input!

noted, i will make sure to ad those items to my list of parts

So, top end to sleeper and transmission to Redline?

Why not all of it to Redline?

Free top case port match to cylinders when the top-end gets ported.

Do not forget a new eccentric screw, new jamb nut lock washer, a new shift shaft torsion spring and a new shift shaft seal.

When Cam at Redline does a ProMod, he includes modding the shift star and replacing the shift star follower with a shift pro roller bearing follower.

Just have him either reuse your shift star follower spring or get a new OE spring.

Do not use the shift pro easy spring.

1) Star, I wouldn't do it yourself. Send it out.

2) Notching this allows more throw and is good.

3) Don't do the spring.

4) Roller bearing on the detent arm is good.

Another mod is bearing on shift drum. Another is cutting the dogs off some gears. Finally, make sure everything is adjusted correctly.

Thanks for the suggestions earlier, i am doing a pro-mod and having the other items i mentioned done along with it. One of the shops offering the pro-mod tranny doesnt include a bearing on the shift drum, is that going to be very noticeable when you consider the other things i am doing to the tranny already?

so far on my list for tranny mods: Create a roller bearing detent arm, notch the shift shaft window, pro-mod tranny with the shift star modified, and new eccentric screw with lock nut. Is a roller bearing on the shift drum going to be noticed if i skip it?

I've never had a promod, neither does my buddy with a 90hp K&T 421. You could/can shift them just as fast as anything under a full load. Even K&T didn't recommend doing promod transmissions due to the fact if everything else is in good working order you wont see a benefit.

I noticed a huge difference with my promod on the 10mil serval. When I was drag racing with it, I could pretty well shift it like an override. It was a huge improvement over stock tranny.

If it was me I would buy all new shifter parts. Shaft, eccentric, and eccentric spring. Washer if you need it. Then just do the star mod correctly by grinding down far enough. DONE

I wouldnt do anything else at all. And when you adjust your eccentric put the shifter on so the weight of it is on the shaft. Very important part.
